Facility Design Consulting, Building Automation, Power Technology and More

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa., and NEW YORK, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Susquehanna Health has awarded Siemens a contract to provide a wide range
of technology and service solutions for a master facility reinvigoration

Providence Hospital, Hepburn Plaza and The Williamsport Hospital & Medical
Center. The majority of the project work is expected to be completed by
2012.

"This project - the 2012 alliance - is an extension of the long
standing relationship we at Siemens have with Susquehanna Health, and an
opportunity for these hospitals to provide outstanding patient care to the
people of central Pennsylvania," said George Nolen, CEO and president of
Siemens Corporation. "Patients and doctors alike will ultimately benefit
from the advanced technologies we're providing in this new healthcare
environment."
The relationship between Siemens and Susquehanna Health extends back to
the development and implementation of Soarian(R), Siemens' healthcare
information system. Susquehanna Health was the first facility in the world
to go live on both Soarian Clinicals and Financials in order to aid in
delivering on its strategic goals of quality enhancement and process
improvement. For years, the health system has been at the forefront of the
power and promise that advanced healthcare information technology (IT)
holds. The 2012 alliance further underscores Susquehanna Health's
commitment to this new project and will include medical equipment,
healthcare IT, unified communications and collaborative solutions, building
automation technologies, electrical distribution and control, energy
efficiency consulting, lighting, and power technology solutions.
Additionally, Siemens will assist Susquehanna Health with the development
of optimized, process-based facility design recommendations focused on the
highest quality of patient care, efficient workflow and utilization of
resources, and a positive experience for patients and staff.
Among the leading-edge medical equipment provided to Susquehanna Health
is the SOMATOM(R) Definition - the world's first and only dual-source
computed tomography (CT) system. The SOMATOM Definition acquires CT images
using two X- ray sources and two detectors, which enables physicians to
examine patients with elevated or irregular heart rates without having to
administer medication to reduce the heart rate before the exam. The
dual-source capabilities of SOMATOM Definition allow physicians to scan
patients at two different X-ray energy levels simultaneously, which may
enable physicians to better differentiate and isolate bone and soft tissue,
as well as further characterize and distinguish plaque, an early indicator
of heart disease, and tumors.
"Information technology and automation have the potential to transform
hospitals and healthcare delivery in the 21st century much as electronic
banking did in the financial industry in the past century," said Steve
Johnson, president and CEO of Susquehanna Health. "By integrating
communications, IT, medical systems and building technologies, Susquehanna
Health and Siemens plan to create a facility solution that will lower
costs, improve patient care and safety, enhance workflow, reduce medical
errors, decrease patient processing time and create a seamless system."
