First of Its Kind to Meet Only RFID Item Management Standard
EVERETT, Wash., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Companies interested in
RFID (radio frequency identification)-based technology to track items through
the supply chain gained a powerful ally today when Intermec Technologies Corp.
introduced its Intellitag(R) Series PC card reader. The PC card allows
companies to increase operational efficiencies in mobile computing
environments by easily and quickly converting PC card-equipped personal
computers to include RFID readers.
It is the first product of its kind to meet the only approved RFID item
management standard, ANS NCITS 256-1999.
The Intellitag RFID technology reads and writes product information to
RFID tags and scans up to 50 tags per second, without requiring close
proximity or line of sight. By cutting the time required for personnel to
label and inventory individual items, companies substantially increase route
delivery efficiency and reduce costs.
The Type II PC Card uses a 2450 MHz unlicensed spread-spectrum
frequency-hopping architecture that coexists with radio frequency and bar code
data collection networks. The reader product was developed initially to
operate on Intermec's PEN*KEY 6110 pen-based mobile computer, which runs on
the Windows 95 operating system.

Earlier in the year, the company enacted its comprehensive RFID strategy,

base of developers, integrators and value-added resellers, it is bridging the
gap between concept and implementation.

The PC card is compatible with all of Intermec's Intellitag RFID labels,
printers and readers operating in the 2450 MHz frequency range. It can be
integrated for use in applications that require read ranges of up to 2 meters
and beyond. Based on the Intellitag technology, this reader can be programmed
for read-only or read-write operation. A powerful anticollision algorithm
permits up to 50 RFID tags or labels to be scanned per second, regardless of
the total number of tags in the read zone. Available with an optional antenna
for use with a laptop or industrial mobile PC, the Intellitag card fits into
any PCMCIA Type II configuration.
