JACKSON, Mich., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Customer participation in
Consumers Energy's Green Generation renewable energy program is approaching
5,000 enrollments, one year after the program was launched.
"We're pleased with continuing customer interest in supporting
Michigan- based renewable energy sources," said John G. Russell, Consumers
Energy's president and chief operating officer, and a program participant.
"We consider renewable energy part of a balanced supply portfolio, and we
appreciate customers' voluntary support for this effort."
"This is a significant milestone in Michigan's effort to promote
renewable energy sources," said J. Peter Lark, chairman of the Michigan
Public Service Commission. "Thousands of electric customers are taking a
positive step to diversify Michigan's energy portfolio and to reduce
pollution."
Since the launch of Green Generation, four new landfill gas suppliers
located near Birch Run, Lennon, Whitehall and Zeeland have begun producing
renewable energy. In addition, Consumers Energy purchases electricity for
the program generated by two wind turbines located near Mackinaw City.
Consumers Energy has also entered into contracts with other landfill gas
and wind- generation projects which are in various stages of development
and commercial operation. All of the projects are located in Michigan's
Lower Peninsula.
The Green Generation program offers Consumers Energy's electric
customers an opportunity to support renewable energy by voluntarily
enrolling in the program and paying a small premium. Participation options
range from purchasing a "green block" of power for as little as $2.50 per
month, to matching current monthly usage for approximately $12-$14 per
month. Information on the Green Generation program is available at

Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy, provides
natural gas and electricity to nearly 6.5 million of Michigan's 10 million
residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
