Grainger Internet Commerce Announces New Vice President and General Manager

    CHICAGO, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- W.W. Grainger, Inc. (http://www.grainger.com),
North America's leading distributor of maintenance, repair, and operating
(MRO) supplies and related information, announced today the appointment of
Daniel Hamburger to Vice President and General Manager, Internet Commerce.
    In his new position, Mr. Hamburger will act as general manager of the
Internet Commerce at Grainger, which includes overseeing the award-winning
grainger.com Web site.  In addition, he will lead Grainger's expansion into
broader-based Internet commerce initiatives.

team.  His wealth of e-commerce experience and knowledge will help Grainger
maintain and extend its leadership position in the world of business-to-
business Internet Commerce," said Don Bielinski, Group President.
    Prior to joining Grainger, Mr. Hamburger started and ran the Internet
services Group for Chicago-based Metromail (subsequently acquired by
Experian).  While at Metromail he was also responsible for the company's
Internet venture capital investments.  As the Vice President of Strategy, he
assisted in the company's initial public offering on the NYSE in 1996.
    Before joining Metromail, Mr. Hamburger served as Vice President,
Marketing and Business Development for the Information Services business unit
of RR Donnelley and Sons Company, Chicago.  He also served as a consultant
with Bain & Company in London, Warsaw and Boston.  Mr. Hamburger started his
career with Andersen Consulting in Detroit.
    Mr. Hamburger received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in
Industrial Engineering from the University of Michigan.  He also holds an MBA
from Harvard.
    His professional affiliations include membership on the Direct Marketing
Association's New Media Committee and in the Harvard Business School Club of
Chicago.  He has also served as a board director for AdForce, Inc. and
MediaTel Corporation.
    Mr. Hamburger resides in Chicago with his wife and three sons.
