AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- A former J. Crew model, a cable TV
network host, a woodcarver, and a one-time bond trader who now dreams of
powder skiing, will attempt to ski in New England this month for $40 per day -
- including lodging, lift tickets and meals. The project, called "Cheap and
Deep", will be featured on the GreatOutdoors.com Web site and cable TV's
Outdoor Life Network (OLN).
The six skiers, all under 27, will travel with a two-man TV crew that will
videotape their experiences for an OLN program scheduled for January 29 at
9:30 p.m. ET and PT.
The group will also log onto GreatOutdoors.com --
http://www.greatoutdoors.com -- with daily journals, digital images, and cries
for help as their budget is stretched to the max from Jan. 11-22. Every day at
5 p.m. ET, the lean team will host a live apres-ski chat at the site to share
the secrets of their excellent adventure through New England ski country.
Cheap and Deep '98 consists of Boston resident Erich Kaiter, 25, a former
bond trader who was on the U.S. Development Ski Team and U.S. Cycling Team;
woodcarver Todd Maynard, 27, of Boston; catalog model Jessica Wolcott, 26, of
Sun Valley; and OLN feature host Kate Milliken, 26, of New York. Milliken
brought the group together and hopes her skills as a bluegrass musician will
be good for at least a lift ticket or two.
The team expects to get creative as they look for the best deals during
their 11-day pauper's tour that includes Sugarloaf USA in Maine; Tuckerman
Ravine and Cannon Mt. in New Hampshire; and Vermont's Stowe, Mad River
Glen, Killington/Pico, and Stratton. The plan calls for them to crash with
friends, sleep in dorms, hostels, and huts, and hike the backcountry in search
of untracked snow.
Says Cheap and Deep's Todd Maynard, "Where we're staying, they won't be
turning the beds down at night with little chocolate mints on the pillow.
"We'll share our experiences each day on the Web, providing people with
the low-down on where to go, what's fun and what's not, and how to ski New
England as cheaply as possible," he said.
Kate Milliken added, "It wouldn't be much of a story if we skied with an
unlimited budget. We're going to try to groove within the system, rather than
buy our way in.
"We'll have to be especially creative getting onto lifts each day. Maybe
we'll buy single ride tickets at Mad River, ski for a free hour in the morning
at Stowe, and purchase a lot of gasoline from Mobil, which offers $10 off a
Killington lift ticket."
The OLN TV videotape crew, which will accompany the team as they travel in
a Suburban, hope to record some of the local color that makes New England
skiing so unique. Maynard is already looking forward to introducing the group
to his friend in Shrewsbury, Vt. - a man named Larry who made the headlines
one year when a moose fell in love with the family cow.
But can they survive, let alone ski on $40 a day? Says Erich Kaiter, "I've
been out of work for four months. So $40 a day is a luxury for me."
