PennDOT Announces Relocation of Pittsburgh Driver License Center

HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- In keeping with Pennsylvania
Gov. Tom Ridge's goal of making state government more customer-focused, the
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that its
Washington Boulevard Driver License Center in Pittsburgh will relocate
Tuesday, January 13, 1998, to an expanded facility at the Penn Hills Shopping
Center, 11624 Kelekit Drive. The center is moving from 1401 Washington
Boulevard to better serve PennDOT's Allegheny County customers.
"This is an example of the customer service strides PennDOT is making by
enhancing our facilities, upgrading the technologies we use and offering more
pleasant settings to do business," said Betty L. Serian, deputy secretary for
Safety Administration, PennDOT. "These improvements mean quicker, more
efficient service for our 70,000 customers who use the center each year."
The new center is slated to open January 13 at 8:30 a.m., and customers
will notice no disruption to service.
As part of the improvements, a new service innovation will premiere at the
Penn Hills center. A state-of-the-art electronic system provides customers
with a ticket that estimates their wait time. This system speeds service and
eliminates lines.
Usable office space at the new facility has increased from 1,650 square
feet at Washington Boulevard to 7,000 square feet at Penn Hills. Other
improvements include expanded parking, more customer counters, a larger
waiting area and a new children's play area.
In addition to these improvements the center will provide the following
services: processing of regular and commercial licenses; knowledge and road
testing for commercial and non-commercial licenses; replacement of lost or
stolen licenses; photo identification cards; motorcycle learner's permits;
change of address services; and new resident transfers.
Business hours for driver examinations at the Penn Hills center will be
Tuesdays through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The exam center will be
closed Sundays and Mondays. Photo services will be available Mondays through
Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., with extended hours Thursday evenings until
8 p.m. Road tests are by appointment only.
PennDOT also operates another driver license center in downtown
Pittsburgh. It is located at the state office Building, 300 Liberty Avenue,
but does not offer road tests.
In addition to these sites, many PennDOT services are available on-line
for an additional fee at private messenger companies in the greater Pittsburgh
area. Five of these companies operate in Allegheny County. For these
locations and information on surrounding counties, call the toll-free PennDOT
Customer Call Center at 1-800-932-4600.
