Vista Technology Offers Industry's First Server-Integrated Aggregate
Computation and Management Solution for Data Warehousing; New Features
Maximize Productivity and Reduce Cost of Ownership
LOS GATOS, Calif., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Red Brick(R) Systems, Inc.
(Nasdaq: REDB), The Data Warehouse Company(R), today announced that Red Brick
Warehouse version 5.1 is in final beta and is scheduled to be shipped within
30 days. Red Brick Warehouse is the industry's only relational database
management system designed from the ground up for data warehousing.
Red Brick Warehouse 5.1 offers new features designed to maximize
administrator productivity and reduce overall data warehouse cost of
ownership. New to Red Brick Warehouse is the availability of Red Brick
Vista(TM), the industry's first comprehensive, server-integrated solution for
the computation and management of aggregates.
In addition to advanced aggregate management, Version 5.1 offers
TARGETjoin(TM), a new parallel bit-vector join technology that augments Red
Brick's industry-leading family of join technologies; a new GUI administration
tool; advanced query and index optimizations; and SQL BackTrack(TM) for Red
Brick Warehouse, a backup and recovery system designed specifically for Red
Brick.
Red Brick Warehouse 5.1 is designed to help database administrators
improve data warehouse tuning for very large databases (VLDBs), maximize
administrative productivity using new features and reduce data warehouse cost
of ownership by decreasing resource and disk space requirements.
"We believe Vista brings another significant technology first to our
customers who demand an edge in their data warehouse performance," said Chris
Erickson, president and CEO of Red Brick Systems. "More importantly, version
5.1 will increase data warehouse value for our customers. By freeing up an
administrator's valuable time with an intuitive aggregate system, improved
join technology and the other administrative advances in this product, version
5.1 provides a direct benefit to companies in terms of more available time for
critical data warehouse work, less cost to manage the system and important
advances in helping deliver large-scale data warehouses."
What Industry Analysts and Customers Say About Red Brick Warehouse 5.1
"Red Brick continues to maintain its technology lead with the innovative
aggregate management and indexing capabilities it is delivering in this
version," said Robert Craig, director, Data Warehousing and Business
Intelligence Service at Hurwitz Group, Inc. "There is a recognized need for
efficient handling and lifecycle management of aggregates, and Red Brick is
the first to provide an integrated solution that meets this need."
BellSouth Telecommunications uses Red Brick Warehouse for its interconnect
customer/circuit analysis data warehouse. "As our warehouse matures and the
user population diversifies, we are anticipating increased requests for
summarized data and drill down capabilities," said Mark Torres, project leader
at BellSouth. "By using Vista, we'll be able to take advantage of the
significant performance gains inherent in aggregates while fine-tuning the
ability to manage them, and still maintain access to vast quantities of detail
data. The reduction in administration time is a real benefit as we move to
more advanced data warehouse development."
Red Brick Vista
Aggregates, or summarizations of detail data, improve query performance
when repeated queries can be made to a common set of detail data. However,
the monumental tasks of managing and administering the aggregates have, in the
past, undermined the performance gains.
Red Brick's Vista technology significantly improves the benefits
associated with the use of aggregates while reducing administrative overhead.
Vista is an entire system designed to aid in the creation and management of
aggregates. It identifies where aggregates can be created to improve data
warehouse performance, automatically rewrites queries and provides advice on
performance gains based on aggregate usage and need.
* Reduced time and effort
Companies can spend many hours and resources managing aggregate tables in
their data warehouse. Alterations to existing aggregates or the creation of
new aggregates require administrators to spend time employing and maintaining
additional software environments outside the warehouse to manage the
aggregates. They also are required to rewrite existing SQL and educate users
on how to use the new aggregates.
Using Red Brick Vista, the user submits a query and the system
automatically rewrites "aggregate-aware" SQL to direct the query to the
appropriate aggregate tables, eliminating an administrator's intervention. In
addition, the combination of Vista's aggregate management system with Red
Brick's specialized database provides advanced query performance superior to
any OLTP solution today.
Vista's advisor system reduces database administrators' (DBA) time and
effort through a utilization analysis that tells them how many times an
aggregate has been used, and if it could be refined based on changes in user
demands. DBAs no longer need to spend hours guessing which aggregates to
build and then to redesign after user response.
* Reduced cost of ownership
Vista is a server-based approach to aggregate management. It is superior
to middleware aggregate assistance because it can leverage the performance,
maintenance and security optimizations of the server, giving DBAs maximum
control and flexibility over the aggregate environment. This reduces the cost
of investment in middleware products and services and enhances the value of
front-end tools that leverage the server-based work, while improving query
performance and streamlining administrators' time.
Vista's advisor system includes a cost benefit analysis to help DBAs judge
when it is more cost-efficient in terms of disk space to create and use
aggregates. The system provides information and statistics about the
aggregation environment that indicate where tradeoffs can be made on the
number of aggregates used versus their required disk space, while maintaining
peak performance.
