PENNDOT: Fort Pitt Tunnel Closes This Weekend; Contractor Lays Foundation for Future Work

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- PENNDOT announces today that both
outbound and inbound lanes of the Fort Pitt Tunnel will close for preliminary
work on Friday, October 5, beginning at 10:00 p.m. and reopening Sunday,
October 7, at 8:00 a.m.
Wellington Power, as part of their $12.8 million contract, is completing
work inside the tunnel this weekend. Contractors will be connecting the water
line for the fire hydrant system, completing electrical system improvements
and replacing concrete in openings of emergency cross passageways between the
two tunnels.
The work allows the contractor to complete preliminary work in the tunnels
over weekends to minimize the length of closures in 2002 and 2003.
Future closures of the outbound lanes of the Fort Pitt Tunnel include:

-- Friday, October 12, beginning at 10:00 p.m. and reopening Sunday,
          October 14, at noon
-- Friday, October 26, beginning at 10:00 p.m. and reopening Monday,
          October 29, at 5:00 a.m.

The inbound lane of the Fort Pitt Tunnel will close from 6:00 am to 6:00
pm on Saturday, October 27.
The official detour posted for this work includes both directions of the
following routes:

-- Route 51 North to the West End Circle across the West End Bridge to
279 North to the Fort Duquesne Bridge to I-376 (Parkway East)
-- Route 51 South to the Liberty Tunnels across the Liberty Bridge
-- Route 51 North to the West End Circle to Route 837 (Carson Street)
