CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) today
announced that young golf sensation Ty Tryon has agreed to terms with the
Company and will join Callaway Golf's team of staff professionals. Tryon, 17,
will play Callaway Golf(R) clubs and balls, carry a Callaway Golf staff bag
and wear the Company's logo on his hat. He is expected to use a Big Bertha(R)
Hawk Eye(R) VFT(R) Pro Series Titanium Driver, Callaway Golf fairway woods,
Steelhead(TM) X-14(R) Pro Series Irons, an Odyssey(R) Putter and a Callaway
Golf HX(TM) ball.
Tryon grabbed the attention of the golf world in March when he qualified
for the Honda Classic at the age of 16 years, 9 months. He then became the
youngest player to ever make the cut at a PGA Tour event when he qualified for
the final 36 holes of that tournament. At the B.C. Open in July, he posted
the best finish by an amateur in that event's history, finishing 37th. He
will be making his professional debut this week in the PGA Tour event in
Williamsburg, Virginia. He will be competing this fall in the PGA Tour
Qualifying School while continuing his junior year at Dr. Phillips High School
in Orlando, Florida.
"We are excited and proud that Ty Tryon has chosen to start his
professional career as a member of the Callaway Golf family," said Ron
Drapeau, president, CEO and chairman of Callaway Golf. "He is a very mature
young man and an exceptionally skilled golfer with enormous appeal and great
potential. We are particularly pleased that Ty has agreed to continue his
studies as he pursues his career in professional golf, and that he will make
every effort to graduate with his high school class."
Tryon owns a number of prestigious junior golf titles, including the 1999
and 2000 AJGA Boys Championship and the 2000 PGA National Junior
Championship -- the latter by a record 10 strokes. He joins Callaway Golf's
growing stable of top young players, which includes Tryon's longtime friend
Charles Howell III. Both Howell and Tryon are students of Callaway Golf Staff
Professional David Leadbetter.
"It has been my lifelong goal to play professional golf, and it's a thrill
to be doing that in association with a great company like Callaway Golf,"
Tryon said. "I have a lot of confidence in my ability to compete on the
highest level, and I've also got a lot of confidence in the Callaway products
that I'll be using as a professional."
