Boise Unveils Heatstar(TM) Anti-Fraud Technology for Checkprotect(R) Line of Security Papers

Boise is Only Paper Manufacturer to Supply Unique Security Technology to
                                Paper Market

BOISE, Idaho, Oct. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Boise Paper today announced, the
introduction of CheckProtect(R) with HeatStar(TM) Security Papers. Boise
Paper is the first and only paper manufacturer to provide the security
document market with a special thermochromatic ink incorporated in the
finished paper product.
Boise Paper developed HeatStar(TM) in response to the growing document
fraud epidemic. From check fraud alone, it's estimated that 500 million
checks are forged annually in the U.S. resulting in losses totaling $10
billion (Ernst & Young). Losses from check fraud are expected to grow by
2.5% annually in the coming years (American Banker magazine). With an
increase in new, creative and inexpensive means to alter documents,
businesses and government agencies are in a constant battle to defend
themselves and their customers from fraudulent activities. Boise's
CheckProtect(R) with HeatStar(TM) Security Papers provide these very same
businesses and government agencies with a proven and effective security
document paper.
"Boise Paper is fully aware of the continuously growing fraud epidemic
that affects our customers on a daily basis," said Susan Hawkins, Senior
Marketing Manager for Boise Paper. "HeatStar(TM) helps Boise customers in
the fight on document fraud. This new product is also part of the larger
Boise strategy. In 2006 our goal has been to establish the Boise Difference
and go that extra mile for our customers. The introduction of HeatStar(TM)
is just another example of this Boise Difference and shows our commitment
to staying one step ahead of the competition so that our customers are
guaranteed the best possible paper products."
Previously, printers were able to leverage thermochromatic ink only as
custom add-on products that made it more expensive and mass-quantity
prohibitive. But with the advent of HeatStar(TM) the process has been
revolutionized. HeatStar(TM) is a blue star pattern in blended heat
sensitive thermochromatic ink on the backside of Boise's white
CheckPoint(R) paper. The blue star ink begins to decolor at 75 degrees and
completely disappears at 91 degrees. HeatStar(TM) is easily activated by
body heat, which can be applied by simply rubbing one's finger over the
paper. This color-changing property allows a person to easily verify the
authenticity of a document by activating the print and viewing the change
from colored, to colorless and back. Furthermore, HeatStar(TM) is
impossible to duplicate with copiers, scanners, printers or other digital
media.
Boise Paper's CheckProtect(R) with HeatStar(TM) Security Papers are
ideal for a myriad of uses where security is a must including checks, gift
certificates, money orders, vital records, ID cards and more. The
announcement further strengthens Boise's standing as a leading innovator in
the security documents market and reinforces its' commitment to providing
Boise customers with cutting edge technology and products to meet their
growing needs.
Boise Paper's CheckProtect(R) with HeatStar(TM) Security Papers will be
on display this week at the Boise Paper booth (#837) at the Print Solution
2006 Conference in Chicago, Illinois.
