The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Announces New Regional Participant in The National Children's Study

Burlington County, New Jersey is the newest study site

    PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Children's Hospital
of Philadelphia today received a contract to manage a new study site in The
National Children's Study. Children's Hospital will manage local
participation, recruitment and data collection in Burlington County, New
Jersey. The study is funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Investigators anticipate approximately 1,000 families in Burlington
County will participate in the study that will follow children from before
birth until age 21. The National Children's Study eventually will follow a
representative sample of 100,000 children from across the U.S., seeking
information to prevent and treat some of the nation's most pressing health
problems, including autism, birth defects, diabetes, heart disease and
obesity.

"The children enrolled from Burlington County represent a snapshot of
all of America's children," said Jennifer Culhane, Ph.D., M.P.H., principal
investigator of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Study Center. "The
National Children's Study provides us with a great opportunity to
contribute to improving the health of children and families in this county
and across the nation for generations to come."

In the new coverage area Virtua Health, Lourdes Health System and
Capital Health System will participate. The study will be conducted in
conjunction with the Burlington County Health Department.

"By following 100,000 children from before birth to age 21, we hope to
better understand how children's genes and their environment interact to
affect their health and development," Dr. Culhane added.

In November 2005, the National Children's Study named Montgomery
County, Pa. one of seven Vanguard sites in the nation charged with studying
children's health determinants. Schuylkill County, Pa, New Castle County,
Del. and Philadelphia County were added to the list of locations managed by
Children's Hospital in 2007.

In total, the study will be conducted in 105 previously designated
study locations across the U.S., that together are representative of the
nation's population. A national probability sample was used to select the
counties in the study, which took into account factors including race and
ethnicity, income, education level, number of births and babies born with
low birth weights.

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was founded in 1855 as the
nation's first pediatric hospital. Through its long-standing commitment to
providing exceptional patient care, training new generations of pediatric
healthcare professionals and pioneering major research initiatives,
Children's Hospital has fostered many discoveries that have benefited
children worldwide. Its pediatric research program is among the largest in
the country, ranking third in National Institutes of Health funding. In
addition, its unique family-centered care and public service programs have
brought the 430-bed hospital recognition as a leading advocate for children
and adolescents. For more information, visit http://www.chop.edu.
