PR Newswire Names Director of Media Relations

NEW YORK, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- PR Newswire today announced the
appointment of Sam Starnes, a former newspaper reporter, to the position of
director of media relations. Starnes will lead the effort to enhance
PR Newswire's leading role as a trusted news-gathering resource for the media.
Starnes, who most recently served as sales manager of the Houston bureau,
is a former reporter for two Knight-Ridder newspapers in Florida and Georgia.
He will focus on increasing and enhancing journalists' usage of news releases,
photos, and video news releases provided by PR Newswire's members, as well as
increasing usage of expert contacts available through PRN's ProfNet service.
Starnes will direct a national effort which will maintain relationships with
major national news organizations and journalists' associations.
"Sam's experience as a daily newspaper reporter combined with his five
years at PRN make him an ideal choice to manage our relationship with the
media," said Ken Dowell, vice president of media and content development.
"Under his direction, I am confident PRN will continue to be an increasingly
important source of information for print, broadcast, wire and online
journalists."
A key component of the media relations program will be continuing growth
of the PRN Press Room web site (http://www.prnmedia.com), now used by more
than 14,000 journalists, and the site's custom push e-mail delivery system.
Starnes, who recently arranged to place PR Newswire's content on the Houston
Chronicle web site, will also seek similar online partnerships with media web
sites.
"PR Newswire's excellent relationship with the media is why we are the
world's leading wire service for news releases and a leading source of
information for journalists," Starnes said. "I want to continue to grow and
strengthen PR Newswire's partnership with the media well into the next
century."
Starnes joined PR Newswire's Atlanta Bureau as an account executive in
1994 and was named sales manager of the Houston Bureau, which he founded, in
December 1996. He developed a marketing plan for the energy industry, created
the energy pages of PR Newswire's web sites and participated in the conception
and development of the PRN Press Room.
Prior to joining PR Newswire, Starnes spent five years working as a
reporter for The Bradenton Herald in Florida, and The Union-Recorder in
Milledgeville, Georgia.
Starnes, who is based in Atlanta, received a Bachelor of Arts in
Journalism from the University of Georgia. He is a former board member of the
Press Club in Houston and former member of the Atlanta Press Club.
PR Newswire is the world leader in the electronic delivery of information
directly from companies, institutions and agencies through its cutting-edge
wire, fax, satellite, e-mail and Internet network. Forty-five years after
founding the industry, it has 35 bureaus worldwide, an exclusive partnership
with Canada NewsWire and a vast international affiliate system. PR Newswire
