OfficeMax CEO to Receive Top Philanthropy Award From City of Hope

Itasca-based Business Leader to Be Honored at Navy Pier October 5

ITASCA, Ill., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- OfficeMax(R) division president and
CEO, Chris Milliken, will be honored with the Spirit of Life(R) Award from
City of Hope, one of the world's leading research and treatment centers for
cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Milliken will
receive the award Tuesday, October 5, at a gala dinner at the Grand Ballroom
on Navy Pier in Chicago. Milliken is being honored for his outstanding
business and philanthropic leadership.
"It is my privilege to receive City of Hope's Spirit of Life Award,"
Milliken said. "What makes City of Hope unique is the research -- the hope --
that will lead us to a cure for a variety of diseases."
OfficeMax and Milliken are leading City of Hope's 2003-2004 fundraising
campaign, which Milliken named Belief in Hope. The campaign involves all
contract and retail OfficeMax associates, its customers and the office
products industry, and is on track to surpass its ambitious goal of raising $5
million before the year's end.
Milliken's drive and leadership motivated OfficeMax associates to surpass
the company's internal fundraising goal by more than $100,000. All of
OfficeMax's distribution centers, sales offices and call centers participated.
"I am proud of the amazing effort all OfficeMax associates have put forth
to raise money over the past year," Milliken said. "Cancer has touched so many
people's lives, and these funds will help find a cure, not just a treatment.
That's why I called my campaign 'Belief in Hope.' If we keep believing in it,
it's going to happen."
Drawing on the knowledge and experience from his 27-year career with Boise
Office Solutions and having held positions in sales, marketing, operations and
management, Milliken is now leading OfficeMax into the future. Boise Office
Solutions, the Itasca-based business-to-business office products company,
merged with OfficeMax in December. Milliken holds a degree in industrial
management from Clemson University and is a graduate of Columbia University's
Executive Program.
The Spirit of Life gala begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m. in the Grand
Ballroom. The dinner and program begin at 7 p.m. As part of the event,
OfficeMax conducted an internal talent search among its 40,000 associates
nationwide. After submitting audition tapes and videos, 13 associates were
selected to perform six songs during the event, including singing the National
Anthem. For more information on the event, call 1-866-905-HOPE.
