Gwathmey Selected for National Institutes of Health Commercialization Program

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Judith Gwathmey, VMD, Ph.D. of
Gwathmey, Inc. has been selected for the highly acclaimed and competitive
National Institutes of Health Commercialization Assistance Program (NIH-CAP).
    Dr. Gwathmey is the CEO/CSO of Gwathmey, Inc., a preclinical contract
research organization (CRO) in Cambridge, MA.  Gwathmey, Inc. is one of the
129 companies with NIH Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II
grants selected to participate in the program designed to assist some of the
most promising life sciences companies bring their technologies to market.
    According to Dr. Gwathmey, "The NIH-CAP program will be invaluable to us
as we increase our focus on commercialization efforts."  As an NIH-CAP
company, Gwathmey will be provided mentoring and assistance in multiple
business and legal areas including finance, intellectual property, licensing
and funding.
    As a result of NIH-funded SBIR research, Dr. Gwathmey and her team have
identified a genetic pattern present in human idiopathic dilated
cardiomyopathy.  From this work, animal model microarrays as well as human
microarrays will be created to identify novel targets for heart failure
treatment as well as to test new therapeutic agents.  The microarrays will be
of value to medical and pharmaceutical researchers.  The ten-month program
will assist Dr. Gwathmey in bringing these new products to market.
    Dilated cardiomyopathy is the most common of the cardiomyopathies,
comprising more than 90% of all cases.  There is no known cure for dilated
cardiomyopathy, which usually results in heart failure.
    The NIH-CAP is managed by the Larta Institute.  This nationwide technology
commercialization program is designed to assist life sciences companies in the
business development and commercialization of their technologies developed
under SBIR Grants funded by the NIH.
