American General Announces Senior Management Appointments

    HOUSTON, March 5, /PRNewswire/ -- American General Corporation (NYSE: AGC)
today announced several senior management appointments in the legal and
corporate relations divisions of the parent company.
    Mark S. Berg, who has served as senior vice president and general counsel,
has been elected executive vice president and general counsel; Susan A.
Jacobs, deputy general counsel and corporate secretary, has been named to the
additional position of senior vice president; and Thomas S. Zurek has been
named senior vice president and deputy general counsel.  Robert D. Mrlik, vice
president - investor relations, has been elected senior vice president of the
newly formed corporate relations division.
    In commenting on the announcement, Robert M. Devlin, chairman and chief
executive officer, said, "Recognizing key people who make a significant
contribution to the growth and success of American General is essential as we
build for future growth.  We are pleased to acknowledge the dedication and
accomplishments that Mark, Susan, and Robert have achieved for the

    Berg, 39, joined American General in 1997 as senior vice president and
general counsel with responsibility for managing the legal affairs of the
company.  He began his legal career in 1983 with the Houston law firm of
Vinson & Elkins, L.L.P.  Berg was named a partner of the firm in 1990.  His
practice focused on corporate finance, principally in the areas of structured
finance and mergers and acquisitions.  He was responsible for coordinating the
firm's Asian practice and served as co-head of its project finance group.  A
native of Dallas, Texas, Berg received his B.A. degree in public policy and
graduated magna cum laude from Tulane University in 1980, and his J.D. degree
with honors from The University of Texas School of Law in 1983.  He is a
member of the Houston Bar Foundation and the State Bar of Texas.
    In her current position, Jacobs, 51, serves as the company's lead legal
counsel on securities matters.  She joined American General's corporate law
department in 1986 as associate general counsel.  She was named deputy general
counsel and corporate secretary in 1997.  Her business career includes
22 years of legal and corporate experience.  Prior to joining American
General, she was corporate counsel for Tenneco Inc. for five years,
specializing in corporate finance.  She began her legal career as an associate
attorney with the Houston law firm of Butler & Binion.  A native of Waco,
Texas, Jacobs received a B.A. degree from The University of Texas in 1969, and
her J.D. degree from the University of Houston Bates College of Law in 1976.
She is a member of the State Bar of Texas and a fellow of the American College
of Investment Counsel.
    Zurek, 49, will oversee the litigation and employment law functions of the
company.  He joins American General from the Des Moines, Iowa law firm of
Nyemaster, Goode, McLaughlin, Voigts, Hansel, & O'Brien, PC, where he served
as a principal shareholder since 1992, specializing in insurance law and
securities regulation.  His 24-year legal career has focused on commercial and
tort litigation.  A native of Chicago, Illinois, Zurek received his B.S.
degree in business in 1970 and his J.D. degree in 1973 from Drake University.
He is a member of the Board of Governors for the Iowa State Bar Association,
and has served as the president of the Polk County Bar Association.
    Mrlik, 39, is responsible for the corporate relations division, which
includes investor relations, corporate communications, and community relations
activities.  He also will manage the company's corporate advertising and event
marketing programs.  Mrlik joined American General in 1989 as director -
investor relations, and was named vice president - investor relations in 1994.
Prior to joining American General, Mrlik served eight years in corporate
banking, and most recently was vice president of Swiss Bank Corporation, with
responsibility for managing corporate finance and investment banking
relationships.  A native of Manhasset, New York, Mrlik received his B.A.
degree in English from Tulane University in 1981.
