Technology Demonstration Provides Advanced Look the Industry's First PC-Based
OCR Application for ADC
ROSEMONT, Ill., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Caere(R) Corporation
(Nasdaq: CAER), a leading developer of automated identification (Auto ID)
technologies, today announced a technology demonstration of its Imager
OCRpc(TM) at ScanTech '99. Imager OCRpc is a new non-contact OCR technology
for hand held cameras (HHDC) and represents the industry's first PC-based OCR
application for automated data capture. The demonstration will also show how
OCR readers provide a cost-effective alternative to bar code by eliminating
the need for special bar code printers, adaptation of the user's computer
systems or, in many cases, any changes to product labels.
The Imager OCRpc builds on Caere's Imager OCRsl(TM) product, which
pioneered a new Auto ID industry product category, non-contact OCR. Imager
OCRpc collects images directly from a high-speed hand held digital camera and
utilizes the processing power of a desktop PC for both OCR and image
processing. As a result, Imager OCRpc can read multiple lines of text with a
single trigger pull and provides a lower cost solution to the single line
capabilities of the Imager OCRsl.
Imager OCRpc is easily programmable by the VAR to find character strings
of interest, such as part numbers, serial numbers, date codes, lot codes, and
account numbers. The software operates as a background application as it
instantly performs OCR and inputs the scanned and formatted information
directly into any Windows application via the keyboard buffer. This approach
enables data collection VARs to take advantage of the emergence of OCR
solutions with new lower-cost, non-decoded HHDCs.
A complete description of the Imager OCRpc will be available at a later
date from Caere. Customers can contact Caere at 800-543-0334.
Alternative to Bar Code
OCR provides an alternative to bar code because it provides many
advantages. First and foremost, OCR readers can scan and read regular printed
text, eliminating the need for special printing processes. Second, OCR is
effective for placing scannable information in a small space. For example,
12 characters can easily be placed in a space only 1/10th of an inch high by
one inch long. Third, OCR readers process human-readable information,
increasing the value of real estate required for identification labeling.
Fourth, OCR-readable text can be printed on rough substrates. Fifth, OCR
enables users, in many cases, to scan existing printed identification. For
this reason, non-contact OCR is the lowest cost Auto ID solution available.
