Discovery Health Continuing Medical Education (CME) Premieres Program to Shed Light on Dietary Guidelines for Americans

SILVER SPRING, Md., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Discovery Health announced
today the premiere of its Continuing Medical Education (CME) program on the
2005 Dietary Guidelines, EAT RIGHT, LIVE RIGHT: THE POWER OF SIMPLE STEPS
(Premieres: Sunday, October 8, at 10:00 AM ET/PT). Created for use by
health care professionals, the program addresses the epidemic of adult and
childhood obesity in the United States, resulting in a burden of chronic
disease, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and other
diseases.
This new Discovery Health CME program brings together a group of
experts to discuss the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and the
U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans,
which provide scientific-based information to promote health and reduce the
risk of chronic disease. The guidelines provide simple yet sensible steps
that can lead to improved health among all populations. Learning about
dietary guidelines assists in a better understanding of how sound
nutrition, coupled with regular physical activity, can prevent disease and
help individuals live longer, more active lives.
"We know patients are more likely to follow diet and exercise plans if
information is provided to them by physicians. The goal of this new
Discovery Health CME program is to provide physicians and other health care
professionals with simple advice and applicable, everyday tips so they can
help their patients lead healthier, more active lives," said John Whyte,
M.D., M.P.H., vice president of CME, Discovery Health.
Discovery Health CME provides in-depth information and evidence-based
recommendations that has been thoroughly reviewed to ensure scientific
accuracy. Developed for primary care physicians, pediatricians, dieticians,
and other clinicians, EAT RIGHT, LIVE RIGHT, was designed under the
consultation of three board certified physicians, including: Discovery
Health's chief correspondent on nutrition and fitness, Dr. Pamela Peeke;
Dr. Dean Ornish, founder and president, Preventive Medicine Research
Institute; and Dr. Francine Kaufman, Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.
EAT RIGHT, LIVE RIGHT was made possible by an educational grant
provided to Discovery Health by Del Monte Foods, one of the country's
largest and most well known producers, distributors and marketers of
premium quality, branded food and pet products for the U.S. retail market.
"Del Monte is committed to nourishing families and enriching lives
everyday by providing a vast array of healthy, convenient and delicious
fruits, vegetables and tuna products," said Richard G. Wolford, Chairman
and Chief Executive Officer of Del Monte Foods. "We are proud to support
programs like Discovery Health CME, which provides ongoing education to
physicians and healthcare professionals, and better enables American
families to lead a healthier, more active lifestyle."
This Discovery Health CME program and others are available to
physicians on a variety of platforms to fit their individual needs.
Physicians and other health care professionals can view the programs on
Discovery Health every Sunday morning at 9 AM and 10 AM (ET/PT). Each CME
program airs a number of times on Discovery Health to make it easy to
tune-in. Discovery Health CME programs are also available to view online at
