Hands On Atlanta Day Is Largest CityCares Serve-A-Thon

National Network of Volunteer Organizations Makes a Difference
                              Across the Country

ATLANTA, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- With more than 14,000 volunteers working
at locations throughout the city today, Hands On Atlanta is proud to be the
host of the nation's largest Serve-A-Thon. As part of the CityCares network
of volunteer organizations, Hands On Atlanta joins 19 other cities in making a
difference nationally as well.
Several CityCares affiliates have already held city-wide Serve-A-Thons,
for a total of 31,853 participants donating 164,450 volunteer hours.
Additional Serve-A-Thons are scheduled after Hands On Atlanta Day in New York,
Philadelphia, Nashville, Baltimore and Miami.
"We are proud of Hands On Atlanta and the tremendous community involvement
we have here, making this Serve-A-Thon the largest in the nation," said
Michele Naporano, CityCares Associate Director. "We also truly believe that
being part of a national network with national impact makes each affiliate
even stronger locally."
CityCares, through its 37 local affiliates, helps civic-minded companies
promote and organize hands-on community service efforts. This year CityCares
secured its first-ever national Serve-A-Thon sponsor, The Starwood Foundation,
the philanthropic trust for Starwood Hotels and Resorts, one of the world's
largest hotel companies. As a national sponsor, Starwood made a financial
contribution to support Serve-A-Thons in five cities where it has a large
concentration of hotels and associates including Chicago, New York, Atlanta,
Boston and Washington, D.C. In addition, the company recruited Starwood
personnel from its hotels to volunteer at these Serve-A-Thons. To date, more
than 400 Starwood associates have donated 3,344 volunteer hours. Starwood
teams will participate at three elementary school locations on Hands On
Atlanta Day. One week later, Starwood teams will join forces to volunteer in
New York Cares Day.
"Starwood is an example of a company that wanted to have a national
impact, and expand its sponsorship beyond one city," said Jessica Kirkwood,
director of development and marketing for CityCares. "We certainly hope to
increase the number of national sponsors we have in the future to strengthen
our affiliates and their community service events."
CityCares is committed to guiding a spirited and innovative alliance of
37 nonprofit volunteer organizations in the United States and the United
Kingdom. With proven models for successful civic engagement, CityCares offers
management and accountability tools, start-up help, program models and a forum
for mutual support and the exchange of ideas. CityCares affiliates are
committed to providing flexible opportunities for all people to engage in
community service activities. For more information about CityCares please
