Calendar Campaign Helps Firefighters Recruit & Train Rescue Dogs
To Succeed Those Who Searched September 11
CHICAGO and OJAI, Calif., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Disaster
Search Dog Foundation (NDSDF) and its Search Dogs USA website have launched a
campaign to recruit and train more search dogs to replace aging dogs and
provide the United States with a national network of canine rescue teams. The
campaign features firefighters and search dogs in a "Heroes in Action: A Dog
for Every Day 2003 Calendar," with all net proceeds from the sale of the
calendars going to the NDSDF.

Firefighters and search dogs trained by NDSDF, the leading provider of
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)-certified rescue dogs, searched for
victims at the World Trade Center last year and are part of first-response
teams in many parts of the country.
"According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), we need to
have at least 350 dogs trained, ready and living with their firefighter
handlers to be ready for natural and man-made disasters, including terrorist
attacks. We're taking that objective one step further and suggesting
365 dogs -- a dog for every day -- be at the ready," said Randy Gross, a
Sacramento, Calif. firefighter who searched Ground Zero, adding, "We're happy
the new Homeland Security Bill being debated in Washington includes some
funding for training these dogs, but we know we need at least a million
dollars a year to build and sustain a network of dogs at the ready."
The calendar, featuring scenes of the search dogs and the firefighters in
action, is now available at http://www.searchdogcalendar.com or by calling Halsted
Communications, the company publishing the calendar, at (800) 600-7111 x 221.
Visitors to or http://www.searchdogcalendar.com or http://www.halsted.com/searchdogsusa will
receive a free calendar in exchange for joining NDSDF, and MyPoints.com
members will receive the calendar and accrue 300 points for joining NDSDF. An
estimated 35,000 MyPoints.com members have received an email with the calendar
offer, and more may receive the offer later this month as the program is
expanded.
Proceeds from the sale of the calendars go directly to training additional
dogs, including the rescue of unwanted dogs from animal shelters to turn them
into rescuers. "We're very proud of the fact that many of our dogs come from
the shelters where they've landed due to behavioral problems. Those
'problems,' such as digging and searching, are exactly the kind of features we
look for in potential rescue dogs," said Wilma Melville, Executive Director at
NDSDF. "This is a way to commemorate the events of September 11 and do
something positive to help victims of future disasters by ensuring we have a
good network of first responders. The calendars also make great holiday
gifts!"
