Addresses Security, Monitoring and User Management of Wireless PDA Access

    GARTNER SYMPOSIUM/ITxpo, ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Tarantella, Inc., (Nasdaq: TTLA), a leading supplier of Internet
infrastructure software, today announced advanced client support for the
Pocket PC range of handheld PDAs (Personal Digital Assistant) at the Gartner
Symposium/ITxpo 2002. This enables PDA devices produced by HP (Compaq),
Siemens, Toshiba, NEC, Casio and Audiovox to securely access all corporate
applications and systems hosted on any application server, including Microsoft
Windows 2000 Terminal Server, Microsoft Windows NT4 Terminal Server, UNIX,
Linux, mainframe and AS/400 servers.

A Tarantella server acts as a gateway between the mission critical
application servers and the Pocket PC device, ensuring a secure and
authenticated connection, while allowing sessions to be monitored and logged.
It provides fine control of authorization, outlining which users can gain
access to which applications, avoiding uncontrolled access to entire systems
or networks.
Tarantella will demonstrate how users can access applications through the
Tarantella Enterprise 3 software with the Toshiba e740 and the HP (Compaq)
iPaq Pocket PC devices at booth #1225.
"Enterprises need to diligently monitor and tightly secure both wireless
deployments and handheld devices, as both present significant security risks
if left unchecked. IT executives should pilot and deploy asset management,
monitoring, security, and user management tools that employ or interoperate
well with incumbent IT infrastructures," said Phillip Redman, research
director for Gartner, Inc.
Unlike more invasive solutions, Tarantella Enterprise 3 software does not
need to be installed on the actual application servers. This results in low
risk and fast deployment and gives organizations a rapid return on investment,
while providing benefits with scalability, modularity and ease of support.
Through the use of a modular, non-intrusive architecture, Tarantella
Enterprise 3 software can rapidly provide a secure, controllable and cost
effective way to deliver access to key corporate applications and systems,
from a wide range of client devices, including Pocket PCs. The patented
Adaptive Internet Protocol (AIP) of Tarantella software always ensures
applications perform at optimum, LAN-like speeds, even over 802.11 Wireless
LAN or 2.5G and 3G cellular network connections.
"By installing a Tarantella server, the use of wireless PDA access becomes
a safe and affordable reality," said Andrew Bovingdon, Product Marketing
Director at Tarantella. "All wireless data transmissions are encrypted, while
corporate assets such as applications and data are physically retained within
the secure, wired LAN. Only authorized users are able to save data to the
remote device."
The Tarantella Pocket PC client solution is the first to provide a new set
of advanced usability features, introducing SmartZoom -- a fast way to zoom in
for menu selection and SmartView -- for smoother navigation. Combined with
traditional scrolling, panning and scaling functionality it makes using all
types of applications through Tarantella Enterprise 3 via a Pocket PC quick
and easy.

Tarantella software also supports application access from the Nokia 9200
series communicator devices using the Symbian platform.
