BRIDGEVILLE, Pa., Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation is pleased to participate in a neighborhood child safety
project called "Safety Town" sponsored by the North Side YMCA. A dedication
ceremony is being held on October 10, 2000 at 3:30 p.m. in West Park, across
from the YMCA. Ray Hack, P.E., District Engineer for PennDOT will be
presenting road signs and bicycle helmets to Roberta Rimkus, executive
director of the North Side YMCA. "We're concerned about the safety of our
customers, regardless of the vehicle, whether driving a car or riding a
bicycle," Hack said. The program is part of the national "Lights on After
School," sponsored by J.C. Penney, the National Community Education
Associations and the YMCA. The bike helmets and signs will be used by Rick
Croye, director of youth programs for the YMCA.
The "Safety Town" programs will teach children how to avoid threats and
stay safe. Stranger dangers, pedestrian and bicycle safety will be addressed
as well as school bus safety and seat belt use in the family car.
Councilman Sala Udin will dedicate "Safety Town" in memory of Scott Drake.
Bike riders from the YMCA classes and Trinity Lutheran Church School Children
will be participating in the hands-on lessons and utilize West Park across
from the YMCA.
