Raytheon's SilentRunner(TM) Software Selected as Gold Nugget 'Best of the Best' Technology in Defense Department's Bi-Annual Demonstration

    LINTHICUM, Md., Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company's
(NYSE: RTNA; RTNB) premier commercial internal network security product,
SilentRunner(TM), has been selected as a Gold Nugget technology by the Defense
Department's Joint Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (JWID) project
office. Gold Nuggets are characterized as low-cost, low risk leading-edge
technology that will take warfighters into the 21st Century, and this year's
winners will be integrated, where possible, into existing DoD systems in the
summer of 2001. SilentRunner(TM) was one of only two Gold Nuggets selected in
this bi-annual, "best of the best" demonstration, held for three weeks in
July.
Recognizing that the most serious danger to an organization's proprietary
information is internal, Raytheon developed SilentRunner(TM), a Discovery,
Visualization and Analysis system, designed to detect and report the more than
70 percent of network threats that originate within an organization.
SilentRunner(TM) is a passive software tool that monitors network activity in
real time, producing a virtual and actual picture of network usage and
vulnerabilities. This allows network system administrators to spot user
behavioral patterns, including unusual or malicious activity that might be
taking place within the network.
"This award recognizes that SilentRunner(TM) effectively detects and
reports internal computer network threats, thereby saving an organization
thousands, if not millions, of dollars in proprietary or classified
information losses," said Jeff Waxman, vice president of Raytheon's
Information Assurance Products business area. "Raytheon is extremely proud to
be chosen as a Gold Nugget, and we look forward to working with DoD to
leverage our technology in supporting its information security needs."
The JWID is an annual warfighting demonstration hosted by a different
branch of military service every two years, with this year's event run by
United States Space Command. The project showcases off-the-shelf, new and
evolving technologies that solve command and control, communications,
computer, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance interoperability
issues for joint and combined warfighters. Expert teams identify potential
investment strategies toward long-range solutions and facilitate short-term
rapid insertion of low-cost, low risk technology capable of being used in a
defense communications operating environment. During the Theme (first) Year
of the two-year JWID program, Gold Nuggets are selected, with actual fielding
to commands occurring in the Exploitation (second) Year. JWID 2000
demonstrated technology that integrated space forces and space-derived
information with air, land and sea forces.
Raytheon Company, based in Lexington, Mass., is a global technology leader
that provides products and services in the areas of commercial and defense
electronics and business and special mission aircraft. Raytheon has
operations throughout the United States and serves customers in more than 70
countries.

    Note to Editors
SilentRunner(TM) is the only network security system specifically designed
to protect an organization's proprietary information by addressing the insider
threat, the source of more than 70 percent of network security breaches. As a
security solution that monitors an organization's entire system of integrated
networks with real time assessment and visualization capabilities,
SilentRunner(TM) saves time and money in quickly resolving potential abuses.
SilentRunner(TM) is passive, meaning that it cannot be detected, does not
affect network performance and does not take offensive action - system
administrators must decide a course of action based on information provided by
SilentRunner(TM). Using proprietary algorithms that do not rely on key words
and are language independent, SilentRunner(TM) is less intrusive and more
thorough than other security software products. When combined with firewalls
and intrusion detection systems, SilentRunner(TM) effectively completes the
total network security suite. To learn more about Raytheon's
