PITTSBURGH, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- PENNDOT announces today that the
outbound lanes of the Fort Pitt Tunnels will close for preliminary work on
Friday, October 12 beginning at 10:00 p.m. and reopening Sunday, October 14 at
noon.
The weekend closure allows preliminary work in the tunnels to be completed
in efforts to minimize the length of closures in 2002 and 2003.
As part of their $12.8 million contract, Wellington Power will complete
work inside the tunnel connecting the water line for the fire hydrant system,
completing electrical system improvements and replacing concrete in openings
of emergency cross passageways between the two tunnels.
Outbound alternate routes for this weekends closure include:
-- Follow I-376 (Parkway East) to the Fort Duquesne Bridge. Cross the
bridge and follow to the West End Bridge. Cross the bridge and follow
signs for Route 51 South around the West End Circle. Follow signs for
the airport.
-- Follow 279 to the West End Bridge. Cross the bridge and follow signs
for Route 51 South around the West End Circle. Follow signs for the
airport.
-- Follow the Boulevard of the Allies to the Liberty Bridge exit. Cross
the bridge and enter the Liberty Tunnels. Once through the tunnels
follow signs for Route 51 North to I-279 (Parkway West) and follow
signs for the airport.
The Fort Pitt Tunnel will remain open the weekend of October 19, 2001.
Future closures of the outbound lanes of the Fort Pitt Tunnel include
Friday, October 26 beginning at 10:00 p.m. and reopening Monday, October 29 at
5:00 a.m.
The inbound lane of the Fort Pitt Tunnel will close from 6:00 a.m. to
6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 27.
