DTE Energy and Pathways Community Behavioral Healthcare Select RSA Security for Strongly-Protected Enterprise Single Sign-On

        RSA(R) Sign-On Manager Software and Two-Factor Authentication
Increase Security, Bolster Compliance and Reduce the Password Management
                                    Burden

BEDFORD, Mass., Oct. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- RSA Security Inc.
(Nasdaq: RSAS) today announced that DTE Energy Co. and Pathways Community
Behavioral Healthcare, Inc. selected RSA(R) Sign-On Manager enterprise single
sign-on (ESSO) solution paired with RSA(R) Smart Cards to increase corporate
IT security and alleviate the end-user password management burden. RSA Sign-
On Manager software enabled DTE Energy and Pathways to reduce the number of
passwords end-users manage and tighten security through two-factor
authentication. With IntelliAccess(TM) technology, RSA Sign-On Manager
delivers self-service emergency access capabilities, ensuring DTE Energy and
Pathways end-users are never locked out of critical business applications.
DTE Energy, a Detroit-based diversified energy company, deployed RSA Sign-
On Manager within the company's IT security group and to employees with high
security requirements, such as individuals responsible for managing the flow
of energy across the business' network. The project was part of a security
initiative aimed at bolstering protection of critical business systems. RSA
Sign-On Manager software enables users to leverage one strongly-protected
login to access a range of IT software and systems, including the Microsoft(R)
Windows(R) domain, proxy servers, IBM(R) Lotus Notes(R) and various Web
resources.
"As an energy company with millions of customers, it is vital that we
protect the information resources we're chartered to manage," said Mark
Majewski, Manager, Information Protection at DTE Energy. "The RSA Sign-On
Manager software rollout has been a win-win situation for DTE Energy, as we've
increased security while reducing the number of passwords users must provide."
Pathways Community Behavioral Healthcare, a mental health center with 34
office locations throughout Missouri, first rolled out RSA Smart Cards to the
organization's 800 employees to ensure the security of customer healthcare
data and business information. However, Pathways' IT department continued to
drown in password reset requests -- approximately half of all IT help desk
calls involved passwords. To address this challenge, Pathways extended its
investment in RSA Security solutions and deployed RSA Sign-On Manager to the
organization's entire workforce. Now, all Pathways staff rely on RSA Sign-On
Manager software to provide one secure password -- protected by two-factor
authentication -- to access clinical, billing and human resources
applications, as well as Web-based software programs. Pathways successfully
reduced help desk calls associated with passwords, enabling IT staff to focus
on more strategic initiatives.
"Healthcare organizations, including Pathways, are subject to regulations
such as HIPAA, which require that we take appropriate measures to ensure the
security of all customer data," said Richard Colvert, MIS Director at Pathways
Community Behavioral Healthcare. "RSA Security's solutions enabled us to
enforce incredibly tight password policies, which helped bolster security
without creating a situation where end-users turn to risky behaviors -- such
as writing down passwords -- to keep track of login data. In addition,
securing ESSO and two-factor solutions from the same vendor eased the
deployment process and helped Pathways to better-leverage existing technology
investments."
"As organizations wrestle with compliance requirements and general IT
security best practices which dictate tighter password policies, the result
may be that it is much more difficult for end users to securely manage login
information," said John Worrall, vice president of worldwide marketing at RSA
Security. "By consolidating multiple passwords and layering on two-factor
authentication, organizations such as DTE Energy and Pathways are
significantly increasing security, while making it easier for end-users to
manage large numbers of passwords."
