Study Concludes Nellcor(R) N-395 Pulse Oximeter Superior During Difficult Conditions

PLEASANTON, Calif., Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Nellcor Oximetry business
of Mallinckrodt Inc. (NYSE: MKG) today announced that the Nellcor(R) N-395
with Oxismart(R) XL and Sat Seconds(TM) technology outperformed four other
monitors during motion and low perfusion in a recent study. This research was
presented October 7 at the 46th International Respiratory Congress of the
American Association for Respiratory Care in Cincinnati.
Led by Hartmut Gehring, MD, assistant professor of the Department of
Anesthesiology, and Christoph Hornberger, PhD, Institute of Biomedical
Engineering, both at the Medical University of Luebeck, Germany, the study is
entitled The Performance of a New Pulse Oximeter Generation to Motion and Low
Perfusion Simulation during a Desaturation Procedure. The study induced motion
and low perfusion artifacts individually and in combination with each other.
In the category of motion and low perfusion, Dr. Hornberger and his team
of researchers concluded "The Nellcor N-395 Pulse Oximeter demonstrates
superior performance, followed by the Datex-Ohmeda 3900 and the Ivy 2000." An
Agilent Technologies CMS monitor software Rev. B.0 and a Nellcor N-3000 were
also studied.
To evaluate the bias, precision and accuracy of the Nellcor N-3000 and
four new-generation pulse oximeters, Dr. Gehring and Dr. Hornberger led a
study entitled The Bias and Precision of a New Generation of Pulse Oximeters.
Comparing the oxygenation levels of arterial blood samples (SaO2) with the
readings of the new generation of pulse oximeters (SpO2) Dr. Gehring concluded
"All pulse oximeters tested in this investigation fulfilled the high standard
of accuracy within the range of +/-2 saturation points."
"The results of both studies are very important to clinicians," said Doris
Engibous, vice president and general manager, Nellcor Oximetry Business. "Not
only do these well-designed studies provide clinicians a comfort level that
new generation pulse oximeters meet high accuracy standards, they show that,
for their most challenging patients, the Nellcor N-395 gives clinicians the
most reliable results available."
