Ralphs and Disney/Pixar Team Up To Offer 'Monster'-Sized Value to Loyal Shoppers

Ralphs Club Members Can Earn Free Movie Tickets to MONSTERS, INC.

    LOS ANGELES, Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Ralphs, California's first
supermarket chain, is also first in California with free tickets to one of
this year's most-anticipated movies. Ralphs has partnered with
Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios (Nasdaq: PIXR), to allow its
shoppers to earn free movie tickets to the animated feature MONSTERS, INC.
based on their grocery purchases over a four-week period.
From October 3 through October 30, 2001, Ralphs customers who accumulate
$300 in grocery purchases using their Ralphs Club Card will earn two free
tickets (adult matinee or child admission) to MONSTERS, INC., compliments of
Ralphs Club. The film opens Friday, November 2 in theaters nationwide. The
free tickets may be used at any theater showing MONSTERS, INC. from
November 2 to November 18, 2001. Shoppers may also use their Senior Rewards
Card to earn the free tickets.
From the Academy Award(R)-winning creators of "Toy Story" comes this
hilarious new computer-animated feature that opens the door to a world of
monsters and mayhem and scares up lots of laughs in the process. Monsters,
Inc. is the largest scare factory in the monster world and the top kid Scarer
is James P. Sullivan (John Goodman), a huge, intimidating monster with blue
fur, large purple spots and horns, known as "Sulley" to his friends. His Scare
Assistant, best friend and roommate is Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), a lime
green, opinionated, feisty, one-eyed monster. Scaring children isn't such an
easy job -- monsters believe children are toxic and that direct contact with
them would be catastrophic. The film's eclectic cast of characters also
includes the factory's crab-like CEO Henry J. Waternoose (James Coburn), the
beguiling serpent-haired receptionist Celia (Jennifer Tilly), and the
sarcastic chameleon monster, Randall Boggs (Steve Buscemi), who schemes to
replace Sulley as Monsters, Inc.'s top Scarer. Visiting from the human world
is Boo (Mary Gibbs), a tiny girl who turns the monster world upside down.
The MONSTERS, INC. ticket promotion is being offered in all Ralphs
supermarkets throughout California and will be supported by television
commercials, radio and print ads, direct mail, in-store radio, point-of-sale
materials, and online support.
"This special promotion is another great way for us to reward our loyal
customers who use their Ralphs Club Card in our stores," said Chuck Ackerman,
Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Ralphs.
In addition to free movie tickets, Ralphs stores are offering customers an
assortment of MONSTERS, INC. merchandise including, toys, books, backpacks,
Hasbro action figures and Colgate-Palmolive toothpaste and toothbrushes.
As part of the promotion, each Ralphs store will hold a MONSTERS, INC.
coloring contest in which children ages 11 and younger have an opportunity to
win a Monster 10" plush figure from MONSTERS, INC. There will be one grand
prize awarded per store. The winner will be drawn at random on Wednesday,
October 31.
"Disney and Pixar's MONSTERS, INC. promises to be one of the biggest films
of the holiday season. We are confident that Ralphs shoppers of all ages will
enjoy this hilarious film," said Ackerman. "We encourage Ralphs shoppers to
use their Ralphs Club Cards and get these tickets early."
Ralphs Club Card members enjoy savings on thousands of items throughout
the store in addition to discounts on many popular activities and consumer
services. Applications for Ralphs Club Cards are available at all Ralphs
supermarkets. Applying for a card is easy. Customers simply present a
completed application to a cashier, receive a card on the spot, and the
savings will begin immediately.
