ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company
(NYSE: RTNA, RTNB) will provide information security for the Navy-Marine Corps
Intranet (NMCI) under a subcontract to EDS (NYSE: EDS) worth approximately
$250 million over an initial five-year period. A three-year option would add
up to $150 million to the basic subcontract.
Recently announced as winner of the NMCI procurement, the EDS team, known
as the Information Strike Force, now undertakes the building, maintenance and
operation of the largest information technology program awarded in military
service history.
Raytheon's Secure Networks business, based in St. Petersburg, Fla., a
leader in secure, mission critical information systems, will design, implement
and manage the security aspects of NMCI's network of approximately 360,000
users at 300 Navy and Marine Corps bases in the continental United States,
Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, Iceland and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
NMCI is an integrated computer network that will replace numerous shore-
based command data networks existing in the U. S. Navy and Marine Corps today.
It will provide increased security, worldwide accessibility and
interoperability with other military services and represents the first
department-wide use of desktop management to improve readiness while reducing
cost.
NMCI marks a shift from a government owned and operated system to a new
business model in which the Navy will buy services in a manner similar to that
of customers buying services from a utility company.
"Information security is a Raytheon core competency," said Raytheon
Company Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dan Burnham. "We have the
critical capabilities for this important program. Our leadership in network
security positions us not only to satisfy the needs of NMCI, but to address a
growing government and commercial market as well."
EDS is a recognized global leader in providing E-business and information
technology services to 9,000 business and government clients in 50 countries
around the world. The company founded the IT services industry more than 35
years ago, and continues to deliver expertise to help clients simplify
complexity and achieve superior value in the digital economy.
Raytheon Company, based in Lexington, Mass., is a global technology leader
that provides products and services in the areas of commercial and defense
electronics and business and special mission aircraft. It has operations
throughout the United States and serves customers in more than 70 countries.
Editor's Note:
NMCI will add 50 Raytheon jobs for information technology specialists in
the greater Tampa, Fla., area, and another 50 in the greater Washington DC
metro area.
