Data Critical to Provide Mallinckrodt with Wireless Connectivity For Ventilators

Expanded Agreement Between Companies to Combine AlarmView(TM) Monitoring With
                        Puritan-Bennett(R) Ventilators

ST. LOUIS, Mo., and BOTHELL, Wash., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Data Critical
Corporation (Nasdaq: DCCA), a leader in wireless health care communication,
and Mallinckrodt Inc. (NYSE: MKG), industry leader in respiratory care
products, today announced the two companies are entering into a distribution
agreement for Mallinckrodt's Nellcor Puritan Bennett ventilator division.
Under the new three-year distribution agreement, Data Critical will develop an
interface to allow its AlarmView(TM) wireless data network system to be used
with Puritan-Bennett(R) ventilators. Mallinckrodt will distribute the product
to their new and existing ventilator customers.
Data Critical's existing five-year distribution agreement with the Nellcor
Oximetry Business of Mallinckrodt Inc. was announced in February 1999. Under
terms of that agreement, Nellcor agreed to distribute the AlarmView system
with its market-leading pulse oximetry and multi-parameter monitoring devices.
Today's agreement further solidifies the marketing relationship between the
two companies.
The new agreement significantly expands the market for AlarmView through
Mallinckrodt's extensive U.S. and European business, and enables Mallinckrodt
to offer a cost-effective wireless notification system across its range of
respiratory and patient monitoring products.
"We are very pleased to broaden our relationship with Mallinckrodt by
extending wireless connectivity to their line of ventilators," says Jeffrey S.
Brown, president and CEO of Data Critical Corporation. "This international
agreement represents a tremendous marketing opportunity for AlarmView, the
first wireless system of its kind in the growing ventilator segment of the
healthcare industry."
"Wireless connectivity to mechanical ventilators is becoming increasingly
important to our customers," says Michael Terner, vice president/general
manager of Mallinckrodt's Ventilator Group. "Data Critical's AlarmView
solution will allow busy hospital-based caregivers to remain informed of their
patient's respiratory and ventilator status. This is the first time a
ventilator has been able to wirelessly communicate with clinicians to assist
them with organizing data and allowing for better utilization of valuable
clinician time."
AlarmView is the first portable alarm notification device that allows
wireless connectivity to stand-alone hospital-based patient monitors and
devices, providing timely transmission of critical patient information to
appropriate nursing staff and other health care providers via pagers. When
triggered by an alarm condition, the pager displays the pertinent information
such as bed number, patient name, alarm message and vital signs, delivered
within seconds to nurses within the department.
In addition to the agreements with Mallinckrodt for oximetry and
ventilators, Data Critical also has contracts to interface AlarmView in the
near future with patient monitoring devices from Cardiac Science, CRITIKON,
Medtronic Physio-Control and Protocol Systems.
