PROVIDENCE, R.I., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Spectra Systems today announced
that it had been issued US Patent #6,296,189 B1 for a new and novel barcode
technology that is suitable for use in harsh environments and on rough or
highly textured surfaces.
The LaserCode System optically codes objects such as textiles, garments,
documents, packaging and products using proprietary fluorescent materials
whose efficient nature makes them highly suitable for applications requiring
high-speed identification and sortation.
Commenting on the award, Nabil M. Lawandy, Ph.D., CEO and co-inventor of
LaserCode stated, "LaserCode fills the gap between standard barcodes and RFID.
The technology has the distinct advantages of working in many situations where
standard barcodes are prone to fail and is also much less expensive than RFID.
Its first commercial application is within the commercial mat industry where
frequent laundering and shiny, label protective coatings had presented a
technical challenge for standard black and white barcodes."
Other applications for LaserCode range from marking lumber to identifying
rubber products such as tires and hoses. The company also envisions the
technology for coding glass, metal drums, warehouse containers, printed
circuit boards and other products exposed to harsh conditions, possessing
rough surfaces or placed in difficult to machine-read places. Unlike
barcodes, printed LaserCode is extremely tolerant of the spacing, sizing and
shape of the sequenced fluorescent marks that constitute a code.
"Our plans, stated Dr. Lawandy, are to offer this technology to the Auto
ID market through strategic partnerships with reader and printer equipment
suppliers who have customers in need of such a marking and tracking solution."
