ITASCA, Ill., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- OfficeMax(R) division president and
CEO, Chris Milliken announced that $5.43 million has been raised this year to
benefit City of Hope, one of the world's leading research and treatment
centers for cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other life threatening diseases.
Milliken announced the totals after receiving City of Hope's Spirit of Life(R)
Award for his outstanding business and philanthropic leadership at the
National Office Products International Spirit of Life Gala on October 5 at
Navy Pier in Chicago.
Milliken and OfficeMax led City of Hope's 2003-2004 fundraising campaign,
Belief in Hope. The campaign involved all contract and retail OfficeMax
associates, customers and the office products industry. At the gala event,
Milliken thanked the industry for coming together despite business rivalries.
"You put business competition aside to fight the bigger fight -- to rid
our world of the pain and suffering of disease," Milliken said. "Together we
do make a difference. Since 1983, our industry has raised more than $30
million for City of Hope."
In addition, Milliken thanked the 45,000 OfficeMax associates nationwide
for their creative and innovative efforts in raising more than $358,000,
surpassing the company's internal fundraising goal.
"This campaign is my way of fighting the terrible diseases that haunt our
lives," Milliken said. "With every dollar raised, we have taken another step
in funding research that will -- one day -- deliver cures that will save
suffering and death."
In response to receiving the Spirit of Life award at the event that
attracted nearly 1,000 attendees, Milliken said, "I am proud to be here
tonight as this year's City of Hope honoree. This recognition from a cause
that I hold so close to heart is an achievement that I will forever cherish."
