ANTs Benefits as Oracle Acquires InnoDB

ANTs Data Server Offers Low-Cost Alternative for MySQL Customers and Prospects
                           Dismayed by Acquisition

BURLINGAME, Calif., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ANTs software, inc.
(OTC Bulletin Board: ANTS), a developer of high-performance SQL database
management systems, is a quick solution for MySQL customers alarmed by
Oracle's acquisition of Innobase OY and its InnoDB database technology.
Oracle's ownership of InnoDB, found in the core of MySQL's database product,
creates considerable uncertainty for MySQL users who now find themselves at
the mercy of Oracle. The ANTs Data Server, compatible with applications
written for Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase and soon, other major databases, is an
exceptional alternative for MySQL customers interested in lowering their
database costs and improving performance.
"The full ramifications of this move are unclear, but it's impossible for
me to imagine how this could be good for MySQL because they are now faced with
the prospect of licensing from their biggest rival, the technology
underpinning their main source of revenue," said Boyd Pearce, CEO of ANTs
Software. "With MySQL now under the thumb of their largest competitor and
unable to control its own destiny, much like TimesTen, another database
company recently acquired by Oracle, ANTs stands out as an independent beacon
of hope for organizations seeking to slash their database costs."
The acquisition calls into question the whole concept of dual-license
software. While InnoDB may still have a GPL code branch, it is uncertain
where key future development and bug fixes will be focused. Future
development may focus first or only on the Oracle proprietary source branch,
GPL development might slow significantly as the original developers are
reassigned to Oracle database projects, and the nature of development might
change and move in directions that are beneficial only to Oracle.
"MySQL is in a very difficult situation, with Oracle now in the perfect
strategic position to control not only the pace and extent of InnoDB
development, but more significantly, control MySQL cost structure and
influence MySQL pricing," said Pearce. "Even if MySQL decides to develop
their own transactional storage engine, it could take years before they have a
viable alternative to InnoDB."
According to Pearce, companies who were considering migrating to MySQL to
lower their costs have a better alternative: the ANTs Data Server. Even
assuming MySQL (or any other "free" database) can actually meet an
enterprise's performance requirements, organizations migrating their
applications to MySQL will incur extensive costs rewriting these applications
while continuing to pay handsomely to keep their current databases running.
By moving applications to the ANTs Data Server, with its extensive
compatibility, organizations can cut costs from 50 to 75 percent compared to
traditional relational databases, and from 35 to 50 percent compared to open
source databases, like MySQL, through the use of fewer lower-cost servers and
dramatically reduced license fees and administrative costs. At the same time,
the ANTs Data Server is twice as fast as in-memory databases such as those
from Oracle-TimesTen, and five to 15 times faster than traditional databases.
The ANTs QuickStart(TM) program provides everything organizations need to
cut costs and improve database performance. For $1,995 per server per year,
this limited time offer includes a full production version of the ANTs Data
Server Enterprise Edition, full support and product updates and upgrades, and
offers the option of having ANTs convert any existing Oracle, Sybase or
Microsoft database application. For more information about the QuickStart
program, please go to http://www.ants.com/QuickStart.
