*** 320 Gateway Country Stores to Host Competition Simultaneously ***
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Competitor registration begins today
for the Gateway Country Challenge, the largest-ever computer game tournament,
which kicks off nationwide and in Canada on Nov. 4. In partnership with Intel
and Microsoft, Gateway is hosting the coast-to-coast tournament in all of its
320 Gateway Country stores the weekends of Nov. 4 - 5 and Nov. 11 - 12.
"Gateway recognizes that computer games can be a great family activity and
that families should be able to try products out before they buy," said Keith
Martin, president, Gateway Country stores. "By operating our own stores right
in people's communities, we can showcase the latest in computer games and
serve as a resource so families can learn more about what is available."
In each of four age groups, 570 prizes will be awarded -- 2,280 winners
will receive prizes ranging in value from $50 to $8,000. In total, more than
$300,000 in prizes will be presented.
Participants will have one chance each weekend to post their highest score
on Microsoft's urban racing game, Midtown Madness 2 -- the fast-paced sequel
to last year's award-winning Midtown Madness. The graphics-intensive game
will be played on Intel(R) Pentium III enhanced systems.
During the first weekend of competition, gamers with the highest score in
four age groups at each Gateway Country store will receive a $50 gift
certificate. Following the second round of play, the highest score nationwide
in each age group from the combined weekends will be awarded a certificate for
the purchase of a personalized Gateway PC powered by the new Intel(R) Pentium
4 processor and $5,000.
To encourage participation by all family members, prizes will be awarded
in all four categories: ages 6-9, 10-13, 14-18 and ages 19 and up. On
Saturday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 11, contestants ages 6-9 and 10-13 are
invited to compete. On Sunday, Nov. 5 and Sunday, Nov. 12 contestants ages
14-18, and 19 and up will be invited to race. A contestant does not have to
play in both rounds to qualify for the final prizes.
