DALLAS, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- American Educator, a professional
journal of the American Federation of Teachers published an article in its
fall 2008 issue that showcases the success of Voyager reading programs in
Richmond City Public Schools (VA). The article, written by Jennifer Dubin,
is titled, "Reading Richmond: How Scientifically Based Reading Instruction
Is Dramatically Increasing Reading Achievement."
The article describes how through the use of research-based reading
programs, like the Voyager Universal Literacy System(R) and TimeWarp(R)
Plus, Richmond Public Schools made significant reading gains, especially
with its disadvantaged third grade students.
Other highlights of the article include:
-- Voyager has been an early literacy provider for Richmond since 2002.
-- In 2001-02, 53 percent of economically disadvantaged fifth graders
passed the high-stakes reading test. In 2007-08, 82 percent passed.
-- In 2002-03, seven of the 29 elementary schools were fully accredited
and in 2007-08, 26 of 28 elementary schools were fully accredited.
-- Seventy-one percent of students receive free or reduced priced lunch
with a large minority African American population.
