Checkout Champs Compete for Cash and Trip to Vegas; Members of Chicago Championship Sports Team on Hand to Cheer Contestants

    MELROSE PARK, Ill., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Demonstrating precision
teamwork and superior customer service skills, 12 Jewel Food Store checkout
teams will battle for a trip to Las Vegas and a chance to win $2500 cash when
they compete in the company's service challenge championships on Saturday,
Oct. 17.
    The service challenge championships, to be held at Jewel-Osco,
800 W. North Ave., in Melrose Park, brings together the best checker and
bagger teams from the retailer's 186 stores in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, and
Wisconsin.
    The competition begins at 9 a.m., with the winning two person team to be
crowned by members of the of area's newest championship team -- the Chicago
Wolves -- winners of the International Hockey League's 1998 Turner Cup.
    The Wolves team mascot, "Skates," will be on hand to cheer the teams, pose
for photographs with the winners, and sign autographs.  Wolves senior
executive vice president, Wayne Messmer, will sing the National Anthem.
    The checker and bagger teams representing stores from Joliet, Illinois, to
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, will be judged for their accuracy, efficiency and
customer service skills, as they serve busy Saturday-morning shoppers.
    The winning team will advance to the Nov. 7 finals in Las Vegas, and
compete against checkers and baggers from other American Stores Divisions.
    Jewel-Osco operates 186 stores in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

79 stand-alone Osco Drug Stores in Chicagoland and the Milwaukee area.  The
