Peritus Announces 1-2-3 Performance with AutoEnhancer/2000 For Logic Correction

BILLERICA, Mass., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Peritus Software Services, Inc.
(Nasdaq: PTUS), a leading supplier of Year 2000 services and technologies,
today reported breakthrough productivity gains with their
AutoEnhancer/2000(TM) for Logic Correction product. Peritus provides a
high quality, automation-assisted approach to identifying and correcting
date-sensitive COBOL code. Using the AutoEnhancer/2000 for Logic Correction
product, an addition to the AutoEnhancer/2000 family of Year 2000 renovation
products, enables the renovation of one million lines of code in two weeks by
a team of three trained people.
"Results are the backbone of our software evolution business," said Gerald
Hogan, Director of Product Management. "Numerous client renovations
demonstrate that the results we've achieved with our AutoEnhancer/2000 Logic
Correction technology have been consistent and impressive, prompting us to
announce our throughput capability. We believe that this metric raises the
bar for Year 2000 providers, and is just another example of our commitment to
meet the highest quality standards for our clients."

    Metrics
"The Year 2000 problem is especially difficult to scope, and there are a
variety of metrics being used by Year 2000 vendors. As a result, it's
difficult for potential clients to get an apples-to-apples comparison of
renovation capabilities," explained Jim Filreis, Peritus' lead architect of
the AutoEnhancer/2000 for Logic Correction technology. Most Year 2000 vendors
refer to a ratio of a million lines of code (MLoC) over an amount of time.
This measurement commonly refers only to the time it takes for the tool to
parse the code, not including the manual interventions or the before-and-after
code manipulations that are always required. The Peritus metric (1 MLoC in 2
weeks by 3 people) addresses the full correction process from receipt to
return, including identification, correction, and packaging. "By measuring
throughput from receipt to return, Peritus enables companies to get a far more
accurate picture of the resources involved," said Filreis.

    Logic Correction
The AutoEnhancer/2000 technology automates aspects of the identification
of date-sensitive items, correction of the code and generation of bridges and
data conversion programs. The recent enhancements to the AutoEnhancer/2000
for Logic Correction product increase its level of automation and streamline
the user interface for logic correction, thus improving throughput.
Using logic correction, applications are enhanced to infer the century
value from the already existing 2-digit year values. Unlike date-expansion
renovations which change the corporate data model by incorporating larger date
values, logic correction renovations require significantly less knowledge
about the information system and require no changes to the data, no increases
in storage and no changes to the screens and reports.
Like date-expansion renovations, however, logic correction renovations
still require accurate identification of the date-sensitive items. "Peritus
excels in accurate date-sensitive item identification," said Hogan. "Our
'knowledge propagation' technique lets all of our AutoEnhancer/2000 software
identify nearly 100% of the date-sensitive items from their use rather than
from their names. This minimizes the false positives and false negatives
prevalent with other pattern-matching and parsing techniques."
