From Sushi to Sandwiches and Carriers to Crystal Collars: It's Trend and Fashion at Minneapolis' First Pet Boutique

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Lulu & Luigi will open its doors on
Monday, October 20 in St. Louis Park's new lifestyle mall, Excelsior and
Grand. Here, Twin Cities pet owners in search of quality foods and high-end
accessories will experience the area's one-of-a-kind pet boutique. This year,
Americans will spend $30 billion on pets -- a number that has doubled in less
than
10 years. With 27% of households in the Twin Cities owning cats and nearly
35% owning a dog, there's a strong market to match the growing appetite for
Lulu & Luigi's unique offerings.
Liz Howe, owner and store manager, explains, "Pet owners have demonstrated
that they want premium foods, gourmet treats, and designer clothing for their
dogs and cats. They're looking for the highest quality product for their pets
and we're the destination that has what they're looking for -- plus a few
surprises."
Lulu & Luigi -- named for Howe's Maltese, LuLu and her ragamuffin cat,
Luigi -- offers a complete shopping experience for owners and their pets.
With several departments -- from Frou-Frou La Femme and Man's Best Friend to
Distinguished Palette and No Place Like Home -- shoppers are sure to find a
special gift, the latest trend, something for the home or a treat (for
themselves and their pet!).
Some of the more unique items include hand-painted ceramic bowls,
freshwater pearl necklaces and Swarovski crystal collars, sheepskin coats,
corgi cannolis and Poochie Sushi to-go, sterling silver bracelets and collar
charms, and the Upper-Midwest's exclusive collection of Legally Blonde II
items.
Unlike big-box pet stores, Lulu & Luigi is a true mom-and-pop -- well,
mom-and daughter -- shop. Karen Howe, president and CEO says, "This was an
opportunity for us to work together. The fact that market trends bode so well
for a store like ours and that we're with our customers every day, listening
to them and delivering what they want, it's sure to be a success. That makes
us both happy. Of course, it helps that we're best of friends."
And what is that market trend? The American Animal Hospital Association
recently conducted a study and concluded "The [number] of pet owners who
indulge their pets is on the rise." Findings included percentage of pet
owners who:

     * Call themselves "Mommy" or "Daddy:" 83%
     *    Celebrate pet birthdays: 59%
     * Prepare special foods for pets: 66%
     *    Dress pets: 24%

Lulu & Luigi opens on Monday, October 20 at 10 AM. The store's regular
hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 7 PM and the website address
is luluandluigi.com. LuLu & Luigi opened 2003 in a new lifestyle mall on the
western edge of Minneapolis. It is named for two rescued pets: LuLu
(a Maltese) and Luigi (a ragamuffin). This mother-and-daughter
owned-and-operated pet boutique is the first of its kind in the Upper-Midwest.
With trend-setting items and high-quality foods, LuLu & Luigi offers unique,
high-end gifts and accessories for "discriminating pets and the owners who
love them."
