Boston Properties makes donation to The Thurgood Marshall Center For Service And Heritage

BOSTON, Mass., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston Properties, Inc.
(NYSE: BXP), a real estate investment trust, announced today that its
Washington, DC Regional Office has made a $10,000 donation to the Thurgood
Marshall Center for Service and Heritage. The Center is located in a National
Historic Landmark building in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, DC, that
will house the Shaw Heritage Trust and the For Love of Children organization.
Together, these organizations are renovating the Thurgood Marshall Center for
Service and Heritage, and will be its major tenants upon completion of the
construction.
The Shaw Heritage Trust is a non-profit group dedicated to preserving the
history of the Shaw area. For Love of Children, also non-profit, is a
provider of educational and recreational programs, foster care, youth
leadership training and transitional housing, and has been active in the Shaw
community for 35 years.
The Thurgood Marshall Center was designed in the early 1900's by one of
America's first African-American architects, W. Sidney Pittman, son-in-law of
Booker T. Washington. President Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of
the building in 1912. The building was formerly the first full-service
African-American YMCA, and served as an important part of African-American
community life in Washington, DC. The Shaw Heritage Trust and For Love of
Children have been determined to renovate this important building since it
closed in 1982. The structure was named a National Historic Landmark in 1994
and a National Historic Treasure in early 1999. Renovations began in
September 1998 and occupancy is expected in January 2000.
Mitch Norville, Boston Properties' Senior Vice President and Operations
Manager of the Washington, DC office, said, "The renovation of the Thurgood
Marshall Center for Service and Heritage not only gives an older building new
life, it gives a community center back to the Shaw neighborhood. Boston
Properties is pleased to make a donation toward this project."
Thurgood Marshall Center Trust President Norris A. Dodson III stated, "We
are pleased that Boston Properties supports our vision and shares in the
excitement of a new neighborhood collaborative that will serve as a model for
the District of Columbia and other urban areas. Future generations will
benefit greatly from the preservation of this building and its rich history."
Boston Properties is a fully integrated, self-administered and
self-managed real estate investment trust that develops, redevelops, acquires,
manages, operates and owns a diverse portfolio of Class A office, industrial
