Collaboration With Industry Leaders Enables Successful Trial of New IP Connect
Service
BOSTON, VON Conference, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- VeriSign, Inc.
(Nasdaq: VRSN), the leading provider of intelligent infrastructure services
for the Internet and telecommunications networks, today announced a solution
for service providers to interconnect enterprise VoIP networks. Previously,
most carriers could only offer enterprise VoIP services on an intra-campus
basis. If the carrier wanted to interconnect different enterprises, they
needed to route calls over the Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN), even
if the other campuses were also using VoIP. As a result, enterprises customers
lost most of the key benefits of VoIP, as they continued to incur PSTN access
charges and were restricted in the use of rich media services and applications
between enterprises.
The IP Connect suite of services helps solve these problems. By combining
VeriSign's Network Routing Directory and perimeter security solutions with
VeriSign's considerable expertise in providing interoperability between
different protocols, applications, and devices, IP Connect enables true
end-to-end VoIP. This combination allows service providers to accelerate the
deployment of new inter-enterprise IP services and greatly expand their VoIP
portfolio. Carriers can now deliver rich media features -- such as
point-to-point video between enterprises -- in a secure and reliable manner.
"VeriSign is providing a missing piece of the VoIP puzzle. This service
allows islands of IP traffic to be connected end-to-end using IP," said Vernon
Irvin, executive vice president of VeriSign Communications Services. "As more
enterprises demand IP services, VeriSign allows service providers to offer
innovative solutions, including video, messaging, and collaboration."
VeriSign and Cisco Systems have been working together to enable the rich
media functions of the Cisco CallManager IP telephony system to work with
VeriSign's IP Connect services.
The core of the offering, VeriSign's Network Routing Directory, supports
the ENUM (Enhanced Telephone Number Mapping) protocol, SIP (Session Initiation
Protocol), and SS7 (Signaling System #7), thus providing access to key
directory components for route optimization, rules and policy enforcement, and
translations. The Network Routing Directory services include several tiers of
routing and directory for VoIP (inter-carrier, intra-carrier, application
location, and priority), and several tiers of subscriber profiles, including
enterprise, consumer, and small business. This gives carriers the ability to
offer a diverse range of services for all areas of business.
VeriSign also announced the first customer to evaluate this service.
Internap, a leader in IP network optimization, that will utilize the VeriSign
service to interconnect its various locations, which today use the Cisco
CallManager Express IP telephony system.
"The VeriSign solution will help us reduce our overall communications cost
and provide the foundation for a new set of services, including video and
collaboration applications," said David L. Abrahamson, Chief Marketing Officer
of Internap Network Services. "As a technology service company, we are also
excited about the potential of offering these innovative solutions to our
existing customer base. Today, Internap optimizes the applications of many of
the top-tier financial organizations, who are increasingly migrating key
applications to their IP network infrastructure. These companies will quickly
see the value of the end-to-end IP capabilities offered via the VeriSign
solution combined with Internap's Intelligent Route Control technology and
Internet-wide service-level agreements."
