Dr. David Ebsworth Assumes Worldwide Management Responsibility for The Pharmaceutical Business Group of Bayer AG

    WEST HAVEN, Conn., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- David R. Ebsworth, Ph.D., today
was named Head of the worldwide Pharmaceutical Business Group of Bayer AG, the
$31 billion global health care and chemicals company based in Leverkusen,
Germany.  The appointment is effective January 1, 2000.  He succeeds Horst
Meyer, Ph.D., who will retire at that time.
    Dr. Ebsworth will be responsible for all aspects of the company's
$5 billion operations in pharmaceuticals, biologicals and biotechnology,
including research and development, marketing and sales, and manufacturing.
    Dr. Ebsworth currently serves as President of the North American
Pharmaceutical Division for Bayer, based in West Haven, Conn., and Executive
Vice President of Pittsburgh-based Bayer Corporation, which had 1998 sales of
$8 billion.  He also is a member of the Executive Committee of the
Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA).
    A true citizen of the world, David Ebsworth was born in 1954 in Kaduna,
Nigeria, to British parents and also lived in Singapore, Germany, England and
Canada prior to going to the United States.  He earned both a bachelor of
science degree with first class honors and a doctorate in International Labor
Relations from the University of Surrey in England.
    Dr. Ebsworth joined the Bayer Group in 1983 as marketing manager of Bayer
AG subsidiary Bayropharm GmbH.  In 1987 he assumed responsibility for the
Pharmaceutical Division of the Bayer Canadian subsidiary, Miles Canada Inc.,
where he was appointed Vice President and General Manager.
    In 1990 Dr. Ebsworth returned to Germany as head of cardiovascular and
central nervous system product management in the Bayer AG Pharmaceutical
Business Group.  He was later named Executive Vice President in charge of
business operations and marketing for the business group.  He relocated to the
United States in 1995 and assumed his current position.
    Dr. Ebsworth currently serves on the Board of Governors for the University
of New Haven, West Haven, Conn.; the Board of Directors of Inroads/Fairfield-
Westchester Counties, Inc.; and on the Corporate Advisory Council of the
National Coalition of Hispanic Health and Human Services Organizations
(COSSMHO), Washington, D.C.
    Dr. Ebsworth is married and has one son.
