PITTSBURGH, Oct. 20, 2000 /PRNewswire/ -- Did she wake her owners in the
middle of the night to warn of a fire? Maybe he scared an intruder with his
fierce bark and protective instincts? Or did she stop a child from crossing a
busy street? No matter what heroic act a dog might have performed, Skippy Dog
Food wants to hear about it.
Now is the time for dog lovers across America to nominate their canine
friends for Skippy Dog Food's "46th Dog Hero of the Year Award." This award
recognizes dogs that have gone to extraordinary lengths to assist someone in
need. Last year's winner was Shelby, a 7-year-old German Shepherd from Ely,
Iowa, who saved the lives of two adults and two children by alerting them to
dangerously high carbon monoxide levels in the home where they were sleeping.
Shelby carried on a tradition of canine heroism that began in 1954 with Tang,
a Collie from Denison, Texas, who saved children from severe harm or death on
five separate occasions.
