Cell Genesys Confirms Upcoming Clinical Data Presentations for Two GVAX(R) Cancer Vaccine Programs

    SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cell
Genesys, Inc. (Nasdaq: CEGE) today confirmed that new clinical data from both
its GVAX(R) Vaccine for Pancreatic Cancer and GVAX(R) Vaccine for Leukemia
programs will be presented at two upcoming medical conferences later this
year. Following is the schedule of presentations:

    -- AACR-NCI-EORTC meeting in Philadelphia, PA, November 17, 2005
       Phase 2 Trial of GVAX(R) Vaccine for Pancreatic Cancer

    -- American Society of Hematology (ASH) meeting in Atlanta, GA,
       December 12, 2005
       Phase 2 Trial of GVAX(R) Leukemia Vaccine in Chronic Myelogenous
       Leukemia

    In other news, Cell Genesys confirmed that it will announce financial
results for the third quarter 2005 after the markets close on Wednesday,
November 2, 2005, and will hold a webcast teleconference on Thursday, November
3, 2005 at 8:30 a.m. PT. Stephen A. Sherwin, M.D., chairman and chief
