Edison Schools Signs Achievement Management Contract With Fairfax County Public Schools, Virginia

Agreement to serve approximately 1,400 students

NEW YORK, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Edison Schools, the nation's
leading public school partner, announced today that it has signed an agreement
to provide online, monthly, diagnostic assessments as well as achievement
management consulting support services to Fairfax County Public Schools. The
services outlined in the 1-year pilot contract will be delivered to seven
Fairfax schools through Edison's newly launched Tungsten Learning Division.
The partnership began earlier this month and will provide the Benchmark
Assessment and reporting tool system -- an online, diagnostic assessment
program -- for approximately 1,400 students in grades 3, 5, and 8 in Cluster V
of the district. In 2004-2005, the partnership may expand to serve additional
schools and students in the district. Fairfax County Public Schools, located
just outside of Washington D.C., is the nation's 12th largest school district
and enrolls approximately 165,000 students.
Formerly known as Edison Affiliates, Tungsten Learning specializes in
helping school districts raise student achievement through cost-effective
"behind-the-scenes" achievement solutions that are customized to each school
district's needs. Tungsten Learning's suite of full-service achievement
management products and services include Edison's highly effective and
innovative "Benchmark Assessment System".
"Through Tungsten Learning, we are delighted to offer school districts
achievement management solutions that provide teachers and administrators with
the data and support they need to improve instruction and drive student
achievement," said Jim Howland, CEO for Edison's Educational Services.
"Edison's practical know-how in running schools and improving student
performance will certainly be a tremendous value to districts searching for
proven, cost-effective achievement management solutions."
In Fairfax, Tungsten Learning will implement the Benchmark Assessment
System, a revolutionary electronic student assessment system aligned with
Virginia's Standards of Learning, with comprehensive, real-time reporting
capability. With its split-ASP technology platform, the Benchmark system
provides instantaneous feedback to both students and instructors, thereby
helping teachers to gauge and improve student learning in real time, meet
accountability goals, and ultimately help make adequate yearly progress (AYP).
Tungsten Learning will also provide achievement support to Fairfax to assist
in the interpretation of the data and the implementation of professional
development for teachers.
Dr. Daniel Domenech, Superintendent, and Dr. Nancy Sprague, Chief Academic
Officer enthusiastically support the partnership. "We appreciate the fact
that Tungsten Learning's products and services have a proven track record that
can provide us with assessments to help improve student achievement, which is
congruent with our mission 'to educate all students to meet high academic
standards.'"
Tungsten Learning was one of two vendors selected through a competitive
RFP process conducted by Fairfax County Public Schools over the summer months.
At least one dozen vendors sought to partner with Fairfax.
Last month, Edison Schools announced a partnership between Tungsten
Learning and Metropolitan School District (MSD) of Perry Township of Indiana.
That three-year contract will serve approximately 5,000 students in nine
schools.
