Rawsthorne to provide practical approaches to understanding agile analysis
and managing complex backlogs for teams

BELLEVUE, Wash., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Who: Dan Rawsthorne Senior Consultant Danube Technologies, Inc. (http://www.danube.com) Rawsthorne has been developing software for more than 25 years and is an accomplished manager, mentor, coach, trainer, consultant, and architect. The projects he has worked on range from e-commerce, to databases, military avionics and Air Traffic Control. He is a Certified Scrum Trainer and holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of Illinois. He is currently co-writing a book on Story-driven agile development that is due out in 2008. What: Agile Analysis One of the basic rules of agility is "the customer drives." This is typically done by using stories, which represent valuable bits of work to be done by the team. There is a customer (product owner) who provides stories that have value to users and other stakeholders, prioritizes the backlog of stories for the team's consumption, explains the stories to the team in an ongoing conversation, and validates the resulting product's fitness for the marketplace. A major issue, and often a significant problem, is finding the right stories to drive the team. In this session, Rawsthorne will introduce the terms of agile analysis and explain the importance to agile teams. He will offer a highly interactive demonstration leaving participants with a greater appreciation of agile analysis and how it can improve teams and projects. Complex Backlogs for Agile Projects An agile team's backlog is a collection of items (stories and epics) that represent work to be done (or value to be produced) by the team. This backlog has two main purposes: first, to be the source of stories that drive the team, and second, to help the stakeholders understand what is being done, and what will be done, by the team. There is often a mismatch between what is needed by the team and what is needed by the stakeholders. In this talk, participants will discuss these issues and develop a model of complexity. The model is illustrated with simple examples, and Rawsthorne will present a few suggestions for managing this complexity. Attendees will gain a better understanding of the complexities of backlogs and attain valuable tools to help manage them.
