Mark Phelan To Leave Nationwide Financial

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Nationwide Financial Services,
Inc. (NYSE: NFS) today announced that Mark Phelan, senior vice president of
the Individual Investments Group, has decided to leave Nationwide and
retire from corporate life, effective year-end, to pursue personal
interests.
Phelan, 52, joined Nationwide in 1998 as senior vice president of
technology operations and later became president of Nationwide Services
Company. In 2001 he joined Nationwide Financial as senior vice president of
operations and technology. He became senior vice president of Nationwide
Financial's Individual Investments Group in May 2004.
Before joining Nationwide, Phelan held positions with IBM, AT&T and
CheckFree Corporation.
"While I tremendously enjoyed my work at Nationwide for the past eight
years, what I'll miss most is the outstanding group of people I've had the
pleasure of working with," Phelan said. "At the same time, after 30 years
of working in corporate America, it's time for me to explore other avenues
in life, including spending more time on charitable work and possibly
pursuing self-employment."
Mark R. Thresher, president and chief operating officer of Nationwide
Financial, said: "The progress our Individual Investment Group has made is
a credit to Mark's leadership, and his dedication and commitment to
Nationwide speaks for itself. While we'll miss Mark's passion, enthusiasm
and ability to bring out the best in those he works with, we wish him all
the best."
Thresher said the company will immediately begin an internal and
external search for Phelan's replacement.
