Putting Your Garden to Bed for the Winter

Today's Tips for the Well-Groomed Garden From
                        DuPont(TM) Garden Products(TM)

WILMINGTON, Del., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- As the cold weather sets in,
putting your garden to bed for the winter can be as simple as tucking heavy-
eyed toddlers into sleep. With the heavier fall garden chores complete, it's
time to put finishing touches on landscapes to ensure that healthy plants and
flowers awaken for next year's gardening season.
DuPont Landscape Systems Product Portfolio Manager Jim Davis notes,
"Prepping the garden by creating neat, uncluttered areas for the winter months
is important to increasing the landscape's readiness and rejuvenation for the
active, demanding spring season."

    Quick Tips:

    * Clean out gutters and prune overhanging tree branches after most of the
leaves have fallen. Gutters clogged with leaves and twigs can cause
dangerous overflow when it rains and snows.

    * Make sure perennials are healthy for hibernation by cutting back rotting
stems and all yellow or brown leaves. Healthy plants with healthy roots
will help to hold the soil in place.

    * Clean, oil and sharpen gardening tools and organize garage space before
spring. In addition, store tools and lawnmower in a dry place until the
      next gardening season.

    * After the upper section of ground has frozen, apply another layer of
mulch to winterize your plants. This will help to prevent alternate
freezing and thawing of soil, which can cause plants to lift up out of
the ground and break up their root systems.

To protect your plants, shrubs and trees throughout the cold months ahead,
practice proper mulching techniques according to your region of the country.
For example, use a product such as DuPont(TM) Garden Products(TM) Long-Lasting
Mulch, which was designed to prevent soil erosion as well as encourage earlier
spring growth with warmer soil. This 100 percent recyclable product only
requires half the depth of traditional wood mulch and is reusable, easy to
use, and UV-resistant. Although it's great for the winter months, it also
helps eliminate the need for annual mulching.
"Mulching has a variety of purposes throughout the year," says Davis.
"During the winter, it can be used to warm the soil, prevent frost heaving and
soil erosion, and improve the appearance of your garden by filling in
unattractive bare areas. Plus it's a great product for creating a low-
maintenance landscape." Davis recommends checking with your local gardening
association for information on the correct regional mulching techniques to
ensure you nurture the healthiest plants possible.
