LEXINGTON, Mass., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company
(NYSE: RTNA, RTNB) announced today that it has pledged $1.2 million to the
Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems (CenSSIS) at Northeastern
University. Over five years, Raytheon will sponsor general and proprietary
research projects and undergraduate research fellowships.
CenSSIS, established by the National Science Foundation, is a multi-
institutional, interdisciplinary engineering research center that unites
industry partners with its core members to develop new technology products.
Raytheon is CenSSIS's first strategic industrial partner and is also a member
of the board of directors, industrial advisory board and education advisory
board.
"This partnership is focused on advancing engineering research and
education," said Philip Cheney, Raytheon's vice president of Engineering and a
CenSSIS board member. "Our goal is to expose and attract students of all ages
to our exciting and challenging technology and prepare them for a successful
career."
Raytheon and CenSSIS will collaborate on education and curriculum
development to familiarize students with the principals of engineering and a
systems approach to technology development. Four major program elements will
be implemented: research internships in industry; undergraduate educational
laboratories; undergraduate and graduate level interdisciplinary team-taught
courses; and design competitions and summer pre-engineering programs for
middle and high school students.

CenSSIS unites researchers from four academic core partners, Northeastern
University, Boston University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the
University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, and four strategic affiliates - -
Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
