PennDOT Brings Crash Dummies to the Pittsburgh Zoo-Boo

BRIDGEVILLE, Pa., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation will bring special guests to the Third Annual Pittsburgh Zoo-
Boo on Friday, October 27. Vince & Larry the crash dummies along with the
PennDOT Air Bear and McGruff the Crime Dog will be passing out treats and
safety tips, not tricks to the children. The safety celebrities will be
located at the Monster Splash in the aquarium section of the Zoo.
Halloween driving presents challenges for motorists, according to PennDOT
District Engineer Ray Hack. "Motorists need to be extra cautious of Trick or
Treaters along the roadways," said Hack. "At the same time, parents need to
make sure children know how to be safe while out during the evening hours
among vehicles," he added.
PennDOT's crash dummies are part of the National effort to remind children
about safety. Following a few safety tips, parents and children can prevent a
Halloween nightmare from happening.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends the following
safety tips for Trick or Treaters:

     1. Dress in bright, light colored clothing. If your costume is dark,
be sure to add retro-reflective strips.

     2. Carry a flashlight or glowstick.

     3. Cross the street safely. Walk -- never run from house to house or
          across the road.

     4. Cross the street at an intersection, never cross between parked
          cars.

     5. When there are no sidewalks, walk on the left of the road facing
          the traffic.

     6. Use caution at all times when on or near roads. You may be able to
see the car, but the driver of the car may not be able to see you.

     7. Plan the Trick or Treat route ahead of time, and use well-lit
streets. If parents cannot accompany children, make sure the
          children travel in groups.

     8. Trick or Treaters should wait until they got home to sort and check
their candy before it is eaten.
