MELROSE PARK, Ill., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Educating persons with
diabetes about how to lead a more healthy life, Chicago-land's leading food
and drug combination retailer is sponsoring an innovative program to assist
those with the disease.
Registered dietitians will be available for free consultations as part of
the "Eating Healthy with Diabetes" program being presented at 30 Jewel-Osco
Food and Drug Stores during the month of November.
The informational programs include a grocery store and pharmacy tour
designed to help persons with diabetes -- and their families -- make healthy
dietary and medical choices. Each scheduled tour will be about one-hour in
length, with class sizes limited to approximately 10 people to provide more
personal attention.
Persons planning to attend are encouraged to pre-register for the program
by calling 847-916-4500 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
(please see attached list of dates, times and store locations)
Class participants will receive free gift bags containing vendor samples
and coupons, and information about how to receive a free blood glucose
monitor, free insulin pen, and free disposable insulin needles.
Osco Drug diabetes care pharmacists will be available to explain the
advantages and disadvantages of certain diabetes accessories, and a number of
readily available over-the-counter products.
Jewel-Osco chief-executive-officer, Greg Josefowicz, said the Melrose Park
based retailer is committed to helping people live healthier lives, and proud
to again sponsor the program for Chicago-land residents.
"Last year more than 800 people attended these informative classes, and we
hope more will attend this year," Josefowicz said. "Our goal is to help those
with diabetes make the best choices possible with regard to their lifestyle,
food, and diabetes treatment."
An estimated 10 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes, which left
untreated can result in devastating health problems including kidney failure,
eye disease, limb amputations, and coronary failure, according to the U.S.
Center for Disease Control.
"Based on the positive comments from our previous classes, some people
learned more about diabetes in one day than they did in living with the
disease for 20 years," Josefowicz said. "Each time a person with diabetes
visits our stores they can depend on our food and pharmacy associates to help
them with questions and special requests to help them live with and treat
diabetes."
Osco Drug Stores provide a variety of services to help persons with
diabetes, including private consultations with diabetes care pharmacists, and
instruction on how to use diabetes care products such as blood glucose
monitors and insulin injectors.
In addition to sponsoring "Eating Healthy with Diabetes" classes, 16
Chicago-land Jewel-Osco stores are helping the University of Chicago Medical
Center recruit candidates for the Diabetes Prevention Program, the largest and
most significant diabetes prevention project ever undertaken.
The goal of the program is to look for ways to prevent "borderline"
diabetes from progressing into type 2 (adult onset) diabetes.
This nationwide study will involve 3000 participants at 27 sites
throughout the country.
The University of Chicago is seeking 160 participants whose blood sugar is
higher than normal, but not high enough to be considered diabetic. One group
will receive metformin (a drug used to treat diabetes), along with information
on healthy diet and exercise. A third group will receive placebo pills, along
with information on a healthy diet and exercise.
"We are extremely grateful to Jewel-Osco not just for their efforts to
educate people about diabetes, but also for helping us get the word out about
this important clinical study," said diabetes specialist Kenneth Polonsky,
M.D., professor of medicine at the University of Chicago and a principal
investigator of the Diabetes Prevention Program.
Jewel-Osco operates 186 stores in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin.
