PITTSBURGH, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The American Chemistry
Council (ACC), an association of the nation's leading chemical companies,
today announced that Bayer has been selected to receive its Responsible
Care(R) Leadership Award for 2002. The award was presented today to Bayer
Corporation President and CEO Dr. Attila Molnar at the ACC's Leadership
Conference in Houston.
Responsible Care(R) is the chemical industry's health, safety and
environmental performance improvement initiative. Since its launch in 1988,
Responsible Care(R) has been recognized as one of the most successful
environmental, health and safety initiatives by industry anywhere.
"Performance through people is the basis for our success as we build the
New Bayer: sustained commitment to our common values, enhancement of global
programs like Responsible Care(R) and Sustainable Development are just a few
examples that exemplify that spirit," said Dr. Molnar. "The global Bayer
organization embraces Responsible Care(R) and is committed to ensuring our
expertise continues to bring extraordinary benefits to our employees, to our
customers, our suppliers, our shareholders and society at large."
The Responsible Care(R) Leadership Award is given annually to the company
that demonstrates the highest degree of excellence in implementing the ACC's
Responsible Care(R) Codes. The codes are universal standards employed by ACC
member companies to ensure a high degree of performance by management and
employees across the company.
An independent panel of judges chose Bayer based on quantitative and
qualitative measures. Among the judges were volunteer representatives from
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. To
be eligible, a company must perform in the top 10 percent, or be one of the
top four companies in its size group on total recordable injury and illness
incident rates. Bayer was chosen as the winner in the ACC Large Company
category. ExxonMobil Chemical was selected in the Medium-Sized Company
category. Companies must also have fully implemented the Responsible Care(R)
Codes, completed a management system verification, and have reported company
performance goals and progress. Eligible companies then complete an
application describing their leadership and performance in reducing emissions
and incidents, their participation in product stewardship and product testing,
and their involvement in community outreach.
Highlights in the areas of safety and environmental protection were
significant contributors to Bayer's selection:
* Safety: Since 1992, Bayer reduced by 60 percent the rate of employee
injury. In 2001 and 2002, Bayer was rated second and third,
respectively, in safety for large chemical companies.
* Environment: Since 1996, Bayer reduced by more than 85 percent
environmental emissions of chemicals on the EPA's Toxic Release
Inventory, and reduced by 60 percent the company's overall rate of
waste generation.
