MARLBORO, Mass., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) has declared Raytheon Company's ASR-11 Digital Airport
Surveillance Radar (DASR) ready for national deployment. The in-service
decision allows the FAA to move into full production of the ASR-11 for
fielding into the National Airspace System (NAS). The current contract value
is $291 million with a potential lifetime value of $620 million.
"The deployment of the ASR-11 provides a cornerstone for the NAS
modernization efforts. The digital data output of the system is the first step
toward achieving a network centric National Airspace environment, enabling
improved situational awareness, safety and airspace efficiencies," said Bob
Eckel, vice president of Raytheon's Air Traffic Management Systems. "The in-
service decision is a major milestone that required dedicated cooperative
efforts from the Department of Defense (DoD), FAA and Raytheon teams."
The ASR-11 is the first fully digital solid-state radar to be implemented
by the NAS. The joint DoD/FAA program, led by the U.S. Air Force, replaces
aging analog terminal area ASR-7 and ASR-8 radars, as well as a number of
legacy military ATC radars. It provides airport terminal area primary
surveillance coverage to 60 nautical miles and secondary surveillance to 120
nautical miles. The ASR-11 uses advanced signal processing to provide greatly
improved target and weather processing. It also provides digital data to
support the advanced capabilities of the joint FAA/DoD Standard Terminal
Automation Replacement System (STARS), planned for deployment to more than 300
FAA and DoD sites. The DASR's highly reliable design will provide
significantly reduced total life cycle costs.
